Publisher Description

You probably haven't noticed them. But they've noticed you. They notice everything. That's their job. Sitting quietly in a nondescript car outside a bank making note of the tellers' work habits. Lagging a few car lengths behind the Brinks truck on its daily rounds. Surreptitiously jiggling the handle of an unmarked service door at the racetrack. They're heisters. They're pros, and Parker is far and away the best of them. Tough, smart, hardworking, and relentlessly focused on his trade, he is the heister's heister, the robber's robber, the heavy's heavy. You don't want to cross him, and you don't want to get in his way, because he'll stop at nothing to get what he's after.

In The Hunter, the first volume in the series, Parker roars into New York City, seeking revenge on the woman who betrayed him and on the man who took his money, stealing and scamming his way to redemption.

"Finally got around to reading this - love both movie adaptations (DC on Payback). It was even better then I had hoped. Stark/Westlake is brilliant - not a wasted word or an unnecessary sentence in the book. Now to read the rest of the series. "

" "Hard-boiled" is too mild a term to describe the Starks. Definitely worth checking out. "

" I can definitely understand why this is a classic of the hard-boiled genre. If you're alright with a totally amoral protagonist, then I can't recommend this book highly enough. Great read, plain and simple. "

" Reread this and it still just as good as remember it. Would have given it four stars but I still just don't buy his wife's actions. Just happened to fast and wasn't believable for me. A huge loose end in an otherwise amazingly tight story. "

" Take it for the pulp it is. Parker is anachronistic. Duh. Quick and dirty. "

" Stark is Donald Westlake. The Parker novels come receommended by Antonya Nelson on The Center for Fiction's new website. I enjoyed this one very much, but not sure I'll keep reading the series. "

" A page-turning crime thriller, this book inspired the motion pictures "Point Blank" starring Lee Marvin and "Payback" starring Mel Gibson. "

" En Parker és el paradigma d'antiheroi brutal, perillós i sense escrúpols. És una novel·la senzilleta i sòbria que funciona molt bé. Ha fet que creixessin les meves ganes de llegir l'adaptació al còmic, i segurament d'alguna novel·la més del personatge. "

" Stark's sparse style really highlights the action. Parker is an exciting antihero, and Stark leaves just the right things unsaid. "

" Good grief. This book is so good! It depicts the characters so well and Parker is very much a badass. And then as you go along through the book, it gets really fast and doesn't waste a word. Fantastic, gritty noir. "

" Dug it. Quick read, but Parker is an interesting protagonist. I look forward to reading more of these. "
