A unique blend of historical fact and engaging fiction showing the power of forgiveness.

In 1942, German subs are dispatched to the Gulf of Mexico to sink U.S. vessels carrying goods and fuel. While taking a late-night walk, Helen Mason - widowed by war - discovers the near-lifeless body of a German sailor. Enraged at the site of Josef Landermann's uniform, Helen is prepared to leave him to die when an unusual phrase, faintly uttered, changes her mind.

In The Heart Mender, a small town must prepare itself for the worst the world has to offer, and Josef and Helen must reconcile their pasts to create a future. Previously released as Island of Saints, this new edition includes a reader's guide and a Where Are They Now? update on the real-life characters.

" Started out reading this in order to be of assistance to my daughter as she read it as an assignment for her 8th grade reading. I was blown away...I had never heard about the presence of Nazi subs in the Gulf of Mexico. Great story, great message. Good reading! "

" I loved this book so much I bought it - and I don't buy a lot of books. This was a fantastic story based on true events. I enjoyed learning more about US history while this story unveiled itself. Highly recommended and one of the better stories I've read in a while. It was fairly short and I could have used a little more depth. Already having to create dialoge, I think Andrews tried to keep with the original story - so while I wanted more I felt like he was maybe just trying to keep it true. "

" Good story for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Nothing truly new here unless you don't know about the German uboats off our coasts during WWII. Interesting little mystery but more of a story about people. "

" Nice story. I didn't like it as much as THE NOTICER because it was a fiction book with character building. The story was good but predictable. I was interested in the history of the U boats. This is a part of history I have never heard about except in historical fiction. "
