"Please, please, PLEASE don't think the movie is representative of the book...they make one of the main characters bad! Superb action set against the backdrop of WWII. I'm so glad they seem to be reprinting these as I love them all. They don't write action/suspense like this anymore. "

" I always enjoyed the movie with Gregory Peck and was curious to read the novel it was based on. The characters in the book are different except for the characters played by Peck and Anthony Quinn. However, in the book Andrea (Anthony Quinn) isn't going to kill Mallory (Peck). There are no female characters in the book, while the movie has two. And the James Darren character isn't in the book. So, the plot and characters are different but the story is still good. The pace at the beginning is a little slow, but once the team lands on Navarone, the pace is much better as they try to get to the guns. The book might be better if you have no expectations from seeing the movie. I may have to read another book by MacLean. "

" This was a rip snorter of a book. Heroism, nazis, Brits, big guns, more nazis, explosions, treachery. There may even have been a girl but, it's ok she didn't get in the way much. Ohh, and battleships. "

" Good solid novel - read it mostly as an exercise in plotting. A select group of climber-soldiers must scale an unclimbed cliff face on an island off the coast of Turkey to blow up a German gun battery before a scheduled Allied fleet makes its way past the island. A few twists, but not many. Mostly just a straight ahead war novel. Predictable - but still an enjoyable (and instructive) read. "

" I just enjoy Alistair MacLean. His heroes of are of the old school - men with steel for sinews and superior brains and mental strength. And usually the good guys win. One of my dad's books, being exactly what it's meant to me, a thriller, no more, but none the less for that. "
