"Please, please, PLEASE don't think the movie is representative of the book...they make one of the main characters bad! Superb action set against the backdrop of WWII. I'm so glad they seem to be reprinting these as I love them all. They don't write action/suspense like this anymore. " — Lee (5 out of 5 stars)

" This book, rich in vocabulary. Is an old A team story. Not that much fast paced. nice time pass. "
" A marvelously written book.. Fast-paced from the beginning.. And an excellent story line.. Truly everything you read an Alistair Mclean for.. "
" I always enjoyed the movie with Gregory Peck and was curious to read the novel it was based on. The characters in the book are different except for the characters played by Peck and Anthony Quinn. However, in the book Andrea (Anthony Quinn) isn't going to kill Mallory (Peck). There are no female characters in the book, while the movie has two. And the James Darren character isn't in the book. So, the plot and characters are different but the story is still good. The pace at the beginning is a little slow, but once the team lands on Navarone, the pace is much better as they try to get to the guns. The book might be better if you have no expectations from seeing the movie. I may have to read another book by MacLean. "
" This was a rip snorter of a book. Heroism, nazis, Brits, big guns, more nazis, explosions, treachery. There may even have been a girl but, it's ok she didn't get in the way much. Ohh, and battleships. "
" One of the best WWII novels till date !! "
" Good solid novel - read it mostly as an exercise in plotting. A select group of climber-soldiers must scale an unclimbed cliff face on an island off the coast of Turkey to blow up a German gun battery before a scheduled Allied fleet makes its way past the island. A few twists, but not many. Mostly just a straight ahead war novel. Predictable - but still an enjoyable (and instructive) read. "
" Ages ago that I read this book and got myself another copy of it if I can ever get to it. "
" Great wartime adventure, far far better than the film. Such a pitty that the film was so bad based on a great book with great actors. "
" Read as a kid. Fun adventure book. "
" Greatest World War 2 Novel ....Awesome "
" A classic World War 2 thriller with lots of action and suspense. I saw the movie that was based on this book many years ago and enjoyed it but the book was even better. "
" Excellent. Gripping... Can't put down till the end. "
" Superb - you won't put it down. "
" Sometimes you just want to rip through an adventure story. This is a fine one to choose. 'nuf said. "
" A well-written, literary page-turner. A true classic. "
" Entertainment for boys big and small. I'm a girl, but I love this book. "
" This is an awesome and riveting book. I still have to read Macleans other books. "
" Loved this as a young teen, reading them during a summer at the beach "
" A classic. Perhaps not my favourite of his, I give that to Ice station zebra, but watch the movie and compare to book. Quite faithful adaptation so book has something going for it. "
" Something about MacLean always manages to rub me the wrong way. Don't know quite what is is, but it's always there. "
" An entire navy had tried to silence the guns of Navarone and failed. Full-scale attacks had been driven back. Now they were sending in just five men, each one a specialist in dealing death. "
" I just enjoy Alistair MacLean. His heroes of are of the old school - men with steel for sinews and superior brains and mental strength. And usually the good guys win. One of my dad's books, being exactly what it's meant to me, a thriller, no more, but none the less for that. "
" AMAZING but hard to get into. "
" Must be 35 years since I read it.... "
" It is good but not better than 'Where Eagles Dare' "
" Thrilling. You cannot put down this book once you start even after many reads "
" Another great book that would keep you entertained. It is not a nail bitter but if you need a book to travel with or take to the beach, I think you would do well to pick it up. "
