Here is the first novel of the famous Balkan Trilogy, previously successfully adapted for BBC television, starring Emma Thompson and Kenneth Brannagh. The book is perfectly suited to audio. Charting the experiences of a young couple caught up in the politics of war when living abroad, it is a compelling story of love, loss and reconciliation.

Harriet and Guy Pringle, husband and wife, are in Bucharest, where Guy works, at the outbreak of World War II. Throughout the Fortunes of War series, they are forced to leave the country, travelling through Greece and ending up in North Africa.

This audiobook has everything: suspense, tension, laughter, tears, travel, and a good dose of action. A detailed account of love against the odds, it makes compulsive listening. Download and start listening now!

" This started off very slowly for me but once I got into it I loved it - the scope, the wide array of characters. It sort of felt like Casablanca. I'm looking forward to the next installment. "

" No plot in this character-driven, historical novel. This was a surprise and a disappointment and made for a slow read. However, Manning is very adept at writing character portraits and describing life in Bucharest society during the beginning of WW11. "

" I finished The Great Fortune and ended up totally loving it. Sadly, I bought the first and the third for 1,000 won but I'm missing the second part. It took awhile to get into the old-fashioned style, but now I find the attitudes about the war and class quite interesting. "

" I enjoyed this character study. It is very well written and gives a feel of Bucharest during the phoney war stage of WW II. I'm looking forward to reading the sequels. "

" I kept reading, but while the period itself is fascinating to me (Romania and Greece just before the Germans invaded in WWII), it was simply too much an English-country period piece for my taste. "
