Perhaps no figure in biblical scholarship has been the subject of more controversy and debate than Mary Magdalene. Although she is discussed in the gospels of Philip, Thomas, Peter, and Bartholomew in the collection of writings known as the Gnostic gospels that were rejected by the early Christian church, there is no better insight into this mysterious and influential woman than Mary's own gospel.
The gospel text and the spiritual interpretation of Leloup together reveal unique teachings that emphasize the eminence of the divine feminine and an abiding love of nature over the dualistic and ascetic interpretations of Christianity presented elsewhere. What emerges from this important source text and commentary is a renewal of the sacred feminine in the Western spiritual tradition and a new vision for Christian thought and faith throughout the world.

"I have always viewed the Bible as a guide and historical document. It is great to see the books that were band by the Nicene Council. Leloup turns the image of Miriam of Magdala back to the days of the Divine Feminine. An excellent read and inspiration for the reemergence of the Divine Feminine in the still young Millennia." — Kathy (5 out of 5 stars)

" I too found this book to be very compelling, I came away with one thought every woman on the planet should read this book "
" Ditto Gloria and Heather comments. In short: "a text book written by a freshman philosophy major." "
" This is my typical reading. Found it moving and inspiring. "
" I will read anything by Jean-Yves Leloup whose writing style, at least in English translation, is magical. "
" Leloup's interpretation and commentary is invaluable in conveying this gospel clearly as well as making it relevent to a modern reader. He is honest in pointing out areas of the text which are missing and open to interpretation, including mis-interpretation. I am a fan of every Leloup book I have read. "
" Read (gospel text only) in honor of Mary Magdalene's feast day, 22 July 2012. "
" Difficult read (as expected) but interesting. "
" Interesting. Not incredibly relevatory, but interesting nonetheless. Should be required reading for Christians. "
" A wonderful insight into the unfairly slighted Mary Magdalene, Jesus's "intimate compantion" - first among his disciples and the root of Christian teachings. The esoteric nature of her gospel is beautifully interpreted in this first-ever English translation. "
" quite an enlightening read. i never realized to what extent the feminine element is suppressed in mainstream christianity and how much its reintroduction changes the interpretation of the foundational texts. very interesting, even for non-religious readers (like myself). "
" This book was a little more "text book" than I wanted but I kept at it until I had finished the actual gospel part and really enjoyed that part. "
" I understand why this stuff gets suppressed. Glad they found it and got it out to the public now. "
" This has to be somewhat true. I can't deny the relationship between Mary Magdalene to Jesus in many of the scripts we have in hand. True or not, this is a virtuous book with many things to be looked at. "
" A book filled with good insights, although Leloup's exegesis of one of the most important passage in the Gospel of Mary (pages 15 and 16) did not resonate with me nearly as much as Karen L. King's did; hers made more sense to me. But on the whole, I found Leloup's commentary illuminating. "
" Vastly interesting. I wish there were more of it to study. So glad this snippet exists! "
" This was one of those pivotal books for me; great translation and commentary. One 'mystical aha!' after another. The non-dual aspects of gnostic philosophy shine through. "
" Not the most interesting book, and went off onsome odd tangents, but this would be excellent if it were edited a bit. I enjoyed reading the actual gospel and certain portions of the author's perception of her words. "
" If you do not have a strong relationship with Jesus Christ this book will be misinterpreted. If you have visions it will help you understand them better. "
" As a gnostic gospel produced long after the life of Jesus (and the other gospels), this gospel is not particularly useful for insight into the life of Christ. It is useful, however, for understanding the gnostic tradition. "
" Contains alot of information for those newly interested and unaware of the stories of MM. Not too much new information, but solid. "
" Fascinating book. Leloup wrote his original interpretation of the gospel of Mary in French. Of course, the Gospel of Mary is in Coptic. This is a really complicated and scholarly work but well worth the read. "
" eye opening, every christian person should be required to read this so that they can understand the bible was actually written and edited by men and here's an unedited depiction of their events by a woman "
" good scholarly information, drawn directly from Coptic translations. "
