Publisher Description

"This is a kind of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by way of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland—it's the sort of book one doesn't want to end." —Publisher's Weekly, starred review

September is a girl who longs for adventure. When she is invited to Fairyland by a Green Wind and a Leopard, well, of course she accepts. (Mightn’t you?) But Fairyland is in turmoil, and it will take one twelve-year-old girl, a book-loving dragon, and a strange and almost human boy named Saturday to vanquish an evil Marquess and restore order.

"What a delightful read! It puts me in the mind of the Phantom Tollbooth, less wordplay but more encounters with magical creatures and curious situations. September goes to Fairyland and immediately encounters a flying leopard, a Wyverary (not to be confused with a dragon), and a boy who is actually a marid and goes to battle with a queen. There is so much attention to detail in this title and it is such at a clippy pace. Definitely want to put this in the hands of everyone and let them know not to be scared off by the mouthful of a title!"

" Oh, I love this book so very much. It is cute, clever and whimsical. I adore ALMOST every single character I met in this somewhat fractured Fairyland. This is a perfect book to read to your children, it is guaranteed to spark their imagination!! It is about 12 year old September and her adventures in Fairyland, and all the wonderful inhabitants she meets therein. "

" This is a great book. The heroine, September, is believable, wise and brave. On the way home from doctors office my daughter told me that when they took blood she was thinking she had to be brave like September. The creatures are fantastic especially the "dragon-like" wyvern whose father was a library - we could see him in all his red scaled glory as we read. We can't wait to read the next one. "

" I expected to like this more than I did. Aside from an occasionally self-aware narrator, this felt a lot like Alice in Wonderland and The Phantom Tollbooth to me. Valente had her moments of cleverness, but more with characters and details than with plot, which took about 1/2 the book to hook me in. "

" Like an updated version of Alice Through the Looking Glass or a retread of the Persephone in the Underworld myth, but a gloriously strange and glowingly wonderful creation of its own. To be gulped in a single sitting, if possible! "

" To quote Colin Meloy in his song Wonder, this book is "weird, but mostly wonderful." Take a little Alice in Wonderland, some Wizard of Oz, and some Narnia, then mix in some Gaiman and Lemony Snicket and you have this challenging and wonderful fantasy novel. "

" This book was amazing. Although at times tedious to read when I finally got through i was glad I'd stuck with it. It was pretty long. A nice thick book. Good for anyone who knows how to read well enough. I was exteremely happy that there was no romance, other wise I wouldn't be able to read it. "
