When Brian and Gregory receive an invitation to stay at a distant relative's strange manse...well, they should know better than to go, since this is a middle-grade adventure novel. But they go anyway. Why not? Once there, they stumble upon The Game of Sunken Places, a board game that mirrors a greater game for which they have suddenly become players. Soon the boys are dealing with attitudinal trolls, warring kingdoms, and some very starchy britches. Luckily, they have wit, deadpan observation, and a keen sense of adventure on their side. " I really liked this book... There was a lot of adventure and suspense. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Dennis | 7/13/2013

" fun story with plenty of action and magical creatures. a quick, undemanding read. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Eric | 10/26/2012

" Less complicated follow-up book, but a bit creepier, especially for some YA books. Sets up the next book with quite a strong cliff-hanger. Character development of the main characters is a little shallow, though hints at relational dysfunction start to give a stronger sense of the deeper emotions. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Erin | 2/9/2012

" This one is not as good as the first in the series--it doesn't actually have any kind of resolution! It just leads right into the third. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Ginnyrichey | 1/22/2012

" second in a series - maybe I should have read the first first. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Cara | 10/18/2011

" This second book was just ok. The book trailer for it is quite amusing (thanks Sam!), and there is some pretty witty dialogue if you can make it through the first half of the book. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Kara Dean | 9/26/2011

" I liked this, because it was written by the inimitable M.T. Anderson. But I really missed out by not having read the first book in the series, The Game of Sunken Places. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Mark Flowers | 8/19/2011

" I didn't realize when I started reading this that it is the sequel to Anderson's Game of Sunken Places - but it certainly made me want to read the first one. Maybe after I do so, I'll come back and revise my opinion of this one. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Erin Sterling | 5/10/2011

" 2.5 I guess it's the sequel to a book I haven't read, which is maybe why I found the book hard to get into. Intriguing concept tho. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Lillie | 3/7/2011

" Creepy! But an extremely addictive, page-turning book. I'm about to start the sequel! "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Lacy | 2/28/2011

" Anderson's creepy setting and storytelling reminds me a little of Neil Gaiman. Two young friends are thrown into a life-threatening game that will resolve a feud between two inter-dimensional species. Funny, compelling, and a perfect read for young boys. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Jen | 2/22/2011

" A great read aloud for my older son, alone. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Magda | 1/10/2011

" Bizarre, and very light reading, but fun. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Dorri | 12/5/2010

" A darkly good time, this book is intense in a way that most books are not any longer. It is a slim novel, not exactly 300 pages, but it packs a powerful punch! It assaults on a level that refuses to be ignored. Most likely aimed at children, but I predict anyone with a soul may enjoy it. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Eric | 11/15/2010

" Great book! Fairies, time travel, robots, secret societies. It kind of fell apart for me at the end though. About 80 pages too long. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Maureen | 11/14/2010

" I listened to this on tape, and while it feels like an early go at his later, better composed Jasper Dash books, it is a fine mix of adventure, mystery, fantasy and humor. ("The forest was silent. Except for the screaming.") "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Aly | 11/13/2010

" Not a bad read, exactly, but I had a problem with the premise. What was the point of risking lives for the game of the title? It didn't really add up. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Daniel | 10/27/2010

" The troll was the best character. He needs his own book. He was secretly the protagonist, but the author didn't figure that out in time. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Joseph | 9/3/2010

" Good book but talked about the setting too much. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Marilyn | 8/30/2010

" Pretty fun fantasy/mystery. I sort of reminded me of an expanded Jumanji. Anderson is funny and a bit intellectual in this one so it's not going to appeal to everyone. "
