Publisher Description

There's the Durango in Colorado, the one in Mexico, and the one in Spain; then there's the fourth one - the California town where god and the Franciscans forgot to found a mission. Now all it has going for it is climate - and splendid isolation.

Kelly Vines, a disbarred attorney, and his father-in-law Jack Adair, a former judge just released from prison, are in the market for some isolation, since whoever put Adair in jail seems to have a continuing interest in putting him out of commission. Mayor B.D. (short for Barbara Diane) Huckins and Police Chief Sid Fork, who rolled into town together 22 years ago in a psychedelic bus, can arrange for the isolation, if the price is right.

"Thoroughly enjoyable yarn featuring former judge Jack Adair and former attorney Kelly Vines in the industry-less seaside town (with no beach) of Durango, Calif., with an almost-predictable twist. "

" The plot was interesting but the writing wasn't so good; or maybe the mood was such that I did not like it. Grisham would have done a better job of writing this story. "

" My second Ross Thomas book, and this one did not please as much as Chinaman's Chance, mostly because the central characters aren't quite as much fun. But Thomas is still a fine writer even in a pedestrian book. "
