Publisher Description

Rina Lazarus and her husband, LAPD Homicide Lieutenant Peter Decker, are shocked by an outrage that cuts close to the spiritual heart of their family. Rina's small storefront synagogue has been desecrated with anti-Semitic graffiti and grisly Nazi death camp photographs. The alleged perpetrator is seventeen-year-old Ernesto Golding, a "rich kid" obsessed with haunting suspicions about the origins of his Polish paternal grandfather. Then Ernesto is found brutally murdered, along with his therapist, Dr. Mervin Baldwin, at an exclusive nature camp that caters moneyed, troubled children. For Decker and his wife, unraveling the truth behind Ernesto's violent death becomes more terrifying with each sinister twist. For lethal secrets with roots in the horrors of a past genteration are coming to the surface, propelling Peter and Rina into a ghastly world of ruthless parents and damaged youth -- and toward a dark evil and its ultimate retribution.

"I have liked all the books in this series and somehow skipped this one on my way through. By now the regular characters feel as familiar as some of my real FB friends, so it was fun to step back into their "past" again. I also like the way even the incidental characters grow in these books."

Quotes

  • “Complex, disturbing…Kellerman focuses on the plight of desperate young people misused and misunderstood by their parents, who apply unbearable pressures for success on their often-bewildered children. She also…seamlessly weaves her themes of religious belief and familial respect into a multilayered thriller, with finely realized characters and a tangible sense of place.”

    — Publishers Weekly
  • “Hate groups and disaffected teens are but two of the dramatic elements Kellerman works into the exciting, well-paced story, but perhaps what she does best is speak to faith and family…The depiction of how teens and parents push and pull at one another’s emotions is dead on.”

    — Booklist
  • “The Decker family’s ongoing saga continues to be one of the most intriguing suspense series around. No one does it better than Faye Kellerman.”

" Needing a fast read for a weekend, I finished this Faye Kellerman in a couple of days and found it irresistible as usual for FK and am still haunted by the secondary story of the tracing of the grandfather of a victim's role as a child in the holocaust. "

" I really enjoy the Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus series. I especially enjoyed this book because I learned a lot about the Jewish. Although I read a lot of fiction, I love the "real" things that I also learn through reading. "

" Faye Fellerman's Decker myesteries are satisfying and this one is no different. They provide not scratch the detective mystery reader's itch, they provide a touching and credible window into Orthodox Jewish beliefs and family life. I enjoyed the Forgotten and recommend it to you. "

" This is a guilty pleasure book for me. Trashy, police detective, murder mystery series of novels with the main characters of Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus, Orthodox Jews and he is the LAPD detective! This story include desecration of a synagogue by teens pulled into a therapist's cult. Yup, about as weird as it sounds but a good, quick read for the type. "

" For a Central Iowan, not exposed to large groups of minorities, it is facinating to learn the daily life of a modern Jewish family. Aside from that, this is an excellant mystery with characters that are easy to visualize and a touch of historic interest tucked into the plot too. "
