" I think this book did get boring during the first part, other than that it was stunning. I have just finished the Return of the King and the whole series is great. A must read. "

" I love this book, and will gratefully recommend it to anyone whom is searching for a great fantasy. The only reason this is given four stars is because I cannot concentrate for long periods at a time on the books. The descriptions Tolkien uses is just too much for me, my brain moves too quickly. "

" A must read as part of the literary canon. Tolkien created his own universe for others to share, do not shy away from the length of the series, its worth it! "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Shaun | 9/30/2011

" It takes awhile to get rolling and Tolkien's writing is not always my bag. He likes explaining certain things in detail for no particular reason. Did the prologue really need to have a couple pages devoted to Pipe-weed? Apparently. Still, once the adventure truly begins, it's rather enjoyable. "

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973) was a major scholar of the English language, specializing in Old and Middle English. Twice Professor of Anglo-Saxon (Old English) at the University of Oxford, he also wrote a number of stories, including most famously The Hobbit (1937) and The Lord of the Rings (1954-1955), which are set in a pre-historic era in an invented version of the world which he called by the Middle English name of Middle-earth.
