Georgia Wells had been designed by nature as a poster rather than a pen drawing - magnificent on-stage, but off-stage a little larger than life. It was to meet her that Albert Campion went to the dress-show in Park Lane. Only the day before he had finally located the dinner-jacketed skeleton of her barrister fiancee who had disappeared three years before. And Georgia Wells wasn't allowing it to be suicide, not at any price .

" A window into thirties social attitudes. The plot is intricate, the characters are well drawn, but you really have to suspend your twenty-first century social consciousness. Racism, sexism, and class distinction abound (lots of "stupid" middle and lower class characters). Still, it's a fascinating read. "

" Extra star for the reappearance of Amanda, but otherwise pretty ordinary. "

" I think this has Albert's wife in it and I never liked her. "

" I really enjoyed meeting Amanda again, and all grown up. Notices that Campion has been definitely downgraded to nobility....the first two books seemed to hint that he was a member of the House of Windsor. "

" As a mystery, I would give this 4 stars. I was really guessing and second-guessing until the end. However, the racial epithets and the gender stereotyping that goes on in this book made it practically a total washout. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Grace | 3/12/2013

" In a novel with such feminist sympathies, I found Val's behavior at the end inexplicable. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Chris Irvine | 12/5/2012

" Very much of its time but gripping none the less. "

" Very very good read.Beautifully sketched characters and human relationships. and of course the suspense "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Bonnie | 4/29/2012

" Great mystery. The style, early 20th century British, makes me work a bit to get it all, which I like. "
