Detective Nic Costa faces his hardest case yet. When the sins of the past echo the crimes of the present... When British academic Malise Gabriel falls to his death from a Rome apartment, detective Nic Costa suspects more than a simple accident. Nic is sure Malise's family are hiding vital information. As the investigation deepens, Rome's seedy side is uncovered, revealing a web of deceit, treachery and corruption. The key to the truth lies with the Gabriels.

Why are they so unwilling to co-operate, and who, or what, is the reason for their silence?

" I really liked this mystery. It had some squeamish moments, but the plot really moved along, and only at the beginning did I feel a little lost when points came up that hinted at previous events in the series. I'm looking forward to reading the first books in the set. The details of Italy are well described, and I'm certainly interested in checking out the restaurants Hewson mentions (Sora Margherita, Al Pompiere, and Da Baffetto)! "

" this book was a little hard to follow. I am a young reader so i suppose it wasnt for me but it was interesting in many ways. I can say, though, that i did space out quite a bit of times and i would have to read the sentence more than once. I am not really sure it was boring or it was being my attention span isnt yet there because of my young age. I will read this book a little later again when I mature so i can really know. "

" Clever plot with some good twists and turns. Excellent local colour and insights into Rome. Nice classical references. Strong characters. Enjoyable read. "

" This is the second of this series that I have read, obviously not in order. His books are both mysteries and travelogues chock full of history (Rome). Slow going at times but good story & characters. I need to start at the beginning to learn more background about the main detective, Nic Costa. "

" I got a bit tired by the end, with all the back-and-forth, but really enjoyed the complex premise, the history, and the storytelling. "

" the blurb says if you like Donna Leon, you'll love this. Well.... this is probably the 3rd Nic Costa book I've read and I do like them and him a lot, but he's not Guido and Rome isn't Venice!!!!
That said, this is a great read and I'll put the rest of the series into my to read or read piles! "
