Publisher Description

This remarkable poem, dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I, was Spenser's finest achievement: the first epic poem in modern English. The Faerie Queene combines dramatic narratives of chivalrous adventure with exquisite and picturesque episodes of pageantry. At the same time, Spenser is expounding a deeply-felt allegory of the eternal struggle between Truth and Error.

"I only read through book one, which I enjoyed. That is saying something as poetry is not my thing, particularly epic poetry. The story is fascinating, as are the metaphors. I hope to read the rest of it someday but I am taking a little break for the time being. "

" The wheels have fallen off at this point in the poem. It's beautiful, but it is also messy. "

" Book 6 is I think my least favorite of FQ. It has more political references and a less unified plot-line than the others. That said, it's still an enjoyable read, especially in the Hackett edition. "

" There are some interesting fable-like stories. I'm don't really know what happened but there are a lot of igs and things that happen in the story. It's pretty and it made me think that it could a bit too violent. "

" It can be extremely difficult to read, as it sits on the cusp of old English and the modern tongue...but there is much worthiness to be found in this most syccophantic epic fantasy. It's magical, mystical storytelling...by way of one hell of a drug trip! "

" Great epic poem. The language and meter is a lot of fun, even if you can't understand at least half of what is going on. I would recommend this to people who like reading very old books "

" As usual, only read excerpts. Not my favorite set of poems I've read. Too similar and subpar compared to Chaucer's and others' dream visions, and even dull in its treatment of a lady knight saving another woman. "
