Publisher Description

“I want to talk to Smoky Barrett or I’ll kill myself.” The girl is sixteen, at the scene of a grisly triple homicide, and has a gun to her head. She claims “The Stranger” killed her adoptive family, that he’s been following her all her life, killing everyone she ever loved, and that no one believes her. No one has. Until now. Special Agent Smoky Barrett is head of the violent crimes unit in Los Angeles, the part of the FBI reserved for tracking down the worst of the worst. Her team has been handpicked from among the nation’s elite law enforcement specialists and they are as obsessed and relentless as the psychos they hunt; they’ll have to be to deal with this case. For another vicious double homicide reveals a killer embarked on a dark crusade of trauma and death: an “artist” who’s molding sixteen-year-old Sarah into the perfect victim – and the ultimate weapon. But Smoky Barrett has another, more personal reason for catching The Stranger – an adopted daughter and a new life that are worth protecting at any cost. This time Smoky is going to have to put it all on the line. Because The Stranger is all too real, all too close, and all too relentless. And when he finally shows his face, if she’s not ready to confront her worst fear, Smoky won’t have time to do anything but die.

"While this Smoky novel was good I think the Serial Killer part of this one was too complex and convoluted to make sense. The reasons for the killers actions were mixed with real and metaphorical which led to some confusion. Aside from that I am really starting to like these characters. Smoky and her gang will keep you smiling and thoughtful. Be careful of your heart strings being pulled in the last couple chapters. That was some of the best payoff from long set-ups I have read in a long time."

" He sure does not disappoint! I cried and laughted outloud several time during reading this book. While it is very tense as he writes it to be it is also graced by some real human emotions. Read it; I cant wait to get the next one! "

" The sequel to Shadow Man - absolutely wonderful. I don't know if it is an intense as the first book, or if I had prepared myself to be stunned, but it was a great story. I look for more Smokey Barrett in the very near future! "

" I was disappointed. The first book - Shadow Man - was significantly better. Strange mix of first person and third person narratives and the build-up was too long. "

" This was fantastic! So much better written than the first in the series, and even though the plot was complex he doesn't lose the reader. Phenomenally awful serial killer with some very heavy and emotionally confusing themes. Totally recommend this one. "

" Definitely kept me on my toes! Excellent writer, a little scary, but a serial killer "genre" with passionate, compassionate, crusty, likeable characters (the good guys, not the bad ones!) "

" I just adore the character Smoky Barrett that Cody MacFadyen has created. She's real and the situations she and her team face feel true to life. MacFadyen doesn't flinch at throwing Smoky problems that have no easy answer/no simple solution. And, thank goodness, no deus ex machina endings. "

" I loved this book! Such a compelling story and extremely well-written. The subject matter is very dark and there are some uncomfortable parts that were hard to get through, but it was so, so well done. "
