Quotes & Awards

  • “Is more elegant than any other novel Mr. King has written...The cadence of the book lends it to reading aloud.”

    New York Times

  • “The sorcery of Stephen King…is expertly seductive…The kind of book that keeps you up, red-eyed with fatigue, until two a.m. because it’s not possible to stop turning the pages.”

    Washington Post Book World

  • “King has ingeniously interposed himself between reader and narrative as if he were telling the tale aloud, with a soothing cadence practically audible in the evocative prose. This heartwarming chronicle of brotherly love may be enjoyed by young adults and their parents.”

    Publishers Weekly

  • “Pinchot is a friendly storyteller whose easy manner affords great opportunity for contrast when the magician speaks in a tone that makes his evil intentions obvious. His menacing whisper may frighten young children—but teens will surely enjoy it. Pinchot presents the characters with subtle attention to their class and wit. His command of timing and pace helps to accentuate dramatic events and moments of strong emotion. He moves ahead in a quiet, disarming way until events reach out and grab the listener’s attention.”

" This book is a little different from standard King fare. This truly reads like a fairy tale...but with a King twist. I also loved the hints at Dark Tower lore. "

" Like so much of Kings work this book is very good. Not what you'd expect from him and a change of pace as well but shows just how good an author he is because he can do so much. I tell people to read this one all the time. Its very good. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Cherry | 2/15/2014

" The first, and as of now, the only Stephen King book I have read from cover to cover. This book is amazing and, from what I've heard, unlike any other book by Stephen King. It has great humor, mystery, characters, plot...I could go on, but it's been a while since I read it. The imagery is great too. I remember imagining the main character up in his prison, plotting his escape, and asking for his mother's doll house, then using it for his escape....I won't give any more away. READ IT! "

" Still one of my favorite all-time books, and something of a departure for Stephen King, though any Constant Reader will instantly recognize the characters in the book. "

" Not very well written. Disjointed in spots and not appropriate for a 12 year old if he really wrote this for his daughter. I am not a Stephen King fan and reading this again did not change my opinion. "

" Loved this book. It's felt like King has spent his whole life writing fairytales and fantasy, instead of the truth that this was just a wild hair he decided to pluck one year. It made me wish he had written a shelf-full of similar stories. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Spencer Ross | 3/14/2013

" Great book, except the very end. This is something that Stephen King does quite a bit, unfortunately. He tells a great story and uses a contrivance to finish it. It doesn't mean I stop reading; it's just a bit jarring. "

" King absolutely knows how to tell a story. I love the allegorical nature of the book, pitting good against evil. I'm not a person that loves post-apocalyptic stories, but King makes me want to love this genre. One of the best reads I've had in years. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Deanna | 5/15/2011
