Imperial law enforcer Amaranthe Lokdon is good at her job: She can deter thieves and pacify thugs, if not with a blade, then by toppling an eight-foot pile of coffee canisters onto their heads. But when ravaged bodies show up on the waterfront, an arson covers up human sacrifices, and a powerful business coalition plots to kill the emperor, she feels a tad overwhelmed.

Worse, Sicarius, the empire's most notorious assassin, is in town. He's tied in with the chaos somehow, but Amaranthe would be a fool to cross his path. Unfortunately, her superiors order her to hunt him down. Either they have an unprecedented belief in her skills...or someone wants her dead.

" A fun read with a strong female protagonist. A good start to a series in an interesting world. "

" I really enjoyed the beginning of this book. Through the middle I started getting a little bored. The characters seemed stereotypical and packed depth. I was hoping for some sort of relationship to slowly build between them, but I felt character relationships were weak. There were a lot of little adventures that kept me reading but I found Amaranths ability to sweet talk her way out of just about every situation annoying. The dialog sounded like something a clinical counselor would say sometimes. Idk it just didn't feel believable to me. The end of the book was really good, though I'm not sure if I want to read the second one. I'm wavering between 3 or 4 stars "

" A fun fantasy book, but the interaction between characters is a but too cute for my taste. I enjoyed it, but have desire to read the rest of the books in the series. "

" i loved this book so much, I had to get the rest of the series. And I read them all one time. Amaranthe is a wonderful character to hinge a series on. A female character that is not simply hiding in the kitchen or mooning after guys. She has an agenda and she means business. "
