Two masters of epic fantasy have combined in this brilliant collaboration to create a rousing tale of the sort that becomes an instant favorite. This is the story of Shana, a halfbreed born of the forbidden union of an Elvenlord father with a human mother. Her exiled mother dead, she was rescued and raised by dragons, a proud, ancient race who existed unbeknownst to elven or humankind. From birth, Shana was the embodiment of the Prophecy that all-powerful Elvenlords feared. Her destiny is the enthralling adventure of a lifetime.
“A brisk, glittering yarn that packs as much action, suspense, and twisting of conventions into one novel as many writers invest in whole trilogies.” —Amazing Stories

"Lackey is one of my favorite authors and I really do prefer books that she has written by herself. However, I will go on and read the second and then probably look for the third book as well. Dare I hope that one of the good guys actually survived for the second in the series?? Time will tell." — Mary (4 out of 5 stars)

" Light but decent reading "
" The stunted sentences left me drowning in descriptions and the plot didn't seem to be going anywhere. The characters keep switching off so there was no continuity and it was just awkward to read. Couldn't muddle through it. "
" I don't normally read a lot of fantasy, I just was in the mood for a good story and this wasn't it. Suprising little actually happened, and the end was so anticlimactic. "
" I really did enjoy this book. At times, I could see what was going to happen and didn't want to read it, so I would put the book down. It would take a while before I would pick it back up. The story does capture your attention very quickly. "
" This is another great book by Mercedes Lackey, but I do not like it nearly as much as some of her others. It is worth reading if only to get a completely different view of elves, dragons, unicorns, humans, and half-bloods. "
" This book kept me enthralled. The world created was believable and the main characters were very likeable. "
" I'm dropping this book. Total snorefest. "
" I liked the role reversals of the traditional dragon, elf, and human; it made the story more original. The dragons are the moral, good creatures while the elves are the antagonists, the force to be challenged. It was enjoyable to read. "
" While this book starts out slow, it builds to an exciting climax that will leave you wanting more. The characters are interesting and well developed. I just may have to get the next one. "
" I read it in High School I think. So its been awhile. But I liked the strong heroine and the raised by dragons part. But it just seemed like one big intro for a larger series rather than a book that could stand on its own well. "
" Quite a decent fantasy title -- definitely enjoyed the first half of the book, but the latter half is difficult to parse. And dragons are always win. "
" convincingly created a whole new world for the reader with a complicated hierarchy and fascinating gender dynamics. sexy, traumatic, enchanting, and most definitely Epic! "
" It was one of the best books that I've ever read. It was awesome. I loved it. I like how Lashana is the elvenbane, not her mom or anybody else. "
" A story that has and will stay with me forever "
" I thought this was a good book and a quick read. "
" Haven't read this one in a long time, but what I remember of it is really good. =) "
" One of my guilty-pleasure favorite books from childhood, now a little monotonous but still entertaining. "
" Dragons + elves = Awesome "
" a great story. definitely a different twist on the normal fantasy books coming out these days. "
" The first chapter was deceiving, I was like eww a romance novel, but just keep reading. I like this world with its new spin on elves, pretty cool. "
" A child with a destiny is born....well you know the rest. It's worth it but it won't blow you away and there's lots of dragons. "
" An interesting world, where humans are slaves and elves run things. A prophecy has dictated that a half-elf, half-human will destroy the elves' rule one day, so it is illegal to crossbreed. . . . "
" Perfectly cromulent fantasy, with a touch of other-planet sci-fi. Certainly, it's way better than most collaborations in fantasy, which are generally lifeless and terrible. Ideas are better than the actual story, which bodes well for the second two books in the trilogy. "
" I can't wait for the next book <3 "
" I really enjoyed this whole series. "
" it was good, but i gave the last wheel of time 3 stars, and Elvenbane was not in the same category. Sorry, 2 stars. "
" My only real complaint is that after Andre Norton passed away, Mercedes Lackey opted not to finish the fourth and final book. The three released were quite good and worth the read though. "
" I'd say that this book falls into the category of books, where world building ended up taking precedence over the story. "
" I bought this on a whim (I liked the cover) and read it years ago. It was so good; Hubby bought me #2 while on a little roadtrip. I still have both copies in my library. Oh yeah, it's about elves, humans and all that in-between good stuff! Read it yourself :) "
