Publisher Description

The best-selling, award-winning author of A Place of Execution delivers her most stunning story yet: an intricate, thought-provoking tale of murder and revenge.

Four in the morning, mid-December, snow blankets St. Andrews School. Student Alex Gilbery and his three best friends are staggering home from a party when they stumble upon the body of a young woman.

Rosie Duff has been raped, stabbed, and left for dead in the ancient Pictish cemetery. The only suspects are the four young students stained with her blood.

Twenty-five years later, police mount a cold-case review. Among the unsolved murders they're examining is that of Rosie Duff. But someone else has his own idea of how justice should be done.

One of the original quartet dies in a suspicious house fire. Soon after, a second is killed in what looks like a burglary gone sour. Alex fears the worst. Someone is taking revenge for Rosie Duff. He has to find out who it is before he becomes the next victim. And it might just save his life if he can uncover who killed Rosie all those years ago.

"Somebody recommended this author to me. Im glad I read it, but this book kept me awake until very late. A true page-turner. I simply could not leave it down. The plot was great and very exciting. Even when Ii thought nothing else could hsppen a new surprise was awaiting. A very well written psychological thriller. All the characters are very believable and real. I cant wait to read more books from her. Highly recommended."

" First-rate examination of how suspicion affects lives. Four students find the body of a murdered woman and because there are no other suspects, the weight of suspicion falls on them, staining their lives for a quarter century until someone starts murdering them. One of them finally discovers who really committed the murder, but the meat of the novel is about the impact of suspicion. "

" For all it's 400 odd pages and twenty five year time span, it is something of a short story. I enjoyed it, but I do feel the author was economical with the depths of the plot and characters. "

" 4 young men stumble upon the dying body of a young woman who has been raped and stabbed. The police never catch the killer and the 4 men are thought to be the murderers by the general population. "

" I'm a big fan of the British crime drama "Wire in the Blood" which is based on a Val McDermid character. This is not a Tony Hill book but I saw it at a used book store and figured I would give it a go. Enjoying it so far although I have very little time to read these days. "

" This is another one where McDermid starts with a case that happened about 20 years previously and then brings in the repercussions and consequences in the present day. I was totally caught up in this one too and didn't begin to guess the perpetrator until he was nearly caught...unusual for me. "

" I used to read quite a bit of McDermid, but then she just became to creepy and icky for my tastes. This one wasn't bad. Four young men discover the body of a murdered woman and are assumed by many to be guilty of her murder. No one is ever arrested, and twenty-ve years later the case is re-opened. "

" This was another good read by Val McDermid. More than a mystery. It was really the story of 4 college students being in the wrong place at the wrong time and how it affects the rest of their lives. I did enjoy, but thought it could have been a bit shorter. "
