A community devoured by greed, cowardice, and fear. A man persecuted by his painful past. A woman searching for happiness. In one eventful week, each of them will face questions of life, death, and power, and each will choose their own path. Will they choose good or evil?

The remote village of Viscos is the setting for this extraordinary struggle. A stranger arrives, carrying with him a backpack containing a notebook and 11 gold bars. He comes searching for the answer to a question that torments him: Are human beings, in essence, good or evil? In welcoming the mysterious foreigner, the whole village becomes an accomplice to his sophisticated plot, which will forever mark their lives.

Paulo Coelho's stunning novel explores the timeless struggle between good and evil and its relevance to our everyday dilemmas: to dare to follow our dreams, to have the courage to be different, and to master the fear that prevents us from truly living.

" Read it again. Love this book. Shows how easy it can be to rationalize why we need and deserve to have something we really want but shouldn't have. And how easy it is to have high morals until the right situation comes along. "

" This was a quick read...but a thoughtful one.A stranger comes to town and makes an offer that seems to good to be true.To get the money she needs to live her life as she has always wanted, a young woman must decide if she can trust an entire town to make the right decision. Very good read about temptation and the nature of man. I recommend it! "

" The book reads more like a philosophical dialogue rather than a typical tale. Thus, if you like your stories strictly stories, rather than having a Plato like feel, this may not be the read for you. That said, this book gives a reader's mind plenty to chew on - if you enjoy that, then dig in. "

not a bad story, just not necessarily what I expected. I had to start over twice to really get into it, it's somewhat similar to "The Alchemist" in some aspects, part of the journey is figurative and not necessarily literal.
    Worth a read, regardless!
