During a bone-chilling snap of record cold weather, a series of enigmatic drowning deaths play out in a small summer resort community on Long Island's Shinnecock Bay. Quickly implicated in the death is a local college professor named Deacon Kane, himself recovering from the accidental drowning death of his only son years ago - recovering slowly, and with the help of alcohol and an addictive, messy affair with a married woman.

As the police and several other interested parties watch his every move, Kane befriends a hypnotically alluring bartender named Collette and quickly continues his brutal downward spiral with little regard for self-preservation. Whether and how Kane is connected to the young victims are the questions everyone wants answered. And as it becomes clear that Kane himself may not know the extent of his own involvement, all must admit that something dark and sinister is at work in Southhampton.

Daniel Judson has a virtuoso's touch and an uncanny ability to layer suspense, plot, and character study into an engrossing and completely surprising crime novel that will not soon be forgotten. Download and start listening now!

" This is a "who dun it" and I couldn't figure out who did it. It jumped a bit too much between characters, kinda slow in spots but it was a real wonder all the time.

" Interesting book, better than average for this genre. I thought the strongest points were characterization and, oddly enough, a couple of love scenes--maybe because I know those are hard to write well! I thought it ended too abruptly; I was really into the story. "

" Not bad, but the author seemed to go out of his way to come up with that extra twist to make it "The Book". I enjoyed it and probably would have given it 4 stars if not for the ending, or the basis of the protagonist being tossed into the mess. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Marca | 12/18/2009

" Complicated plot with many characters that is sometimes hard to follow on an audio book. However, it is worth sticking it out. Good mystery; there are lots of twists and turns, and characters who are not what they seem. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Kat | 2/25/2009

" It was a good who-done-it. Several good plot twists and decoys but in the end I had it figured out. The why was kind of out there but oh, well it worked. It was well read and fun to "read". Nothing like murderous brain candy! "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Joyce | 5/20/2008

" One of the better mysteries I have read in awhile. Keeps both the detectives and bad guy in the shade and focuses on folks caught in the middle of an unfolding case. Atmospheric. Enjoyable. "
