At the height of World War II, the famous writer Ernest Hemingway sought permission from the U.S. government to operate a spy ring out of his house in the Cuban countryside. This much is true... It is the summer of '42 and FBI agent Joe Lucas has come to Cuba at the behest of J. Edgar Hoover to keep an eye on Hemingway. The great writer has assembled a ragtag spy ring that he calls the Crook Factory to play a dangerous game of amateur espionage. But then Lucas and Hemingway, against all the odds, uncover a critical piece of intelligence - and the game turns deadly.

In The Crook Factory, award-winning author Dan Simmons expands a little-known fact into a tour de force of gripping historical suspense set in the sensual Cuban landscape of the early 1940s.

" Overall, I enjoyed the book. It would have been better if it was about 200 pages shorter. A good editor can make an okay book great. "

" By the author of Hyperion, a historical thriller in which...Ernest Hemingway is a spy. No really. Not the transcendent experience that Hyperion is, but a fun read. LeCarre does this thing better though. "

" Awesome book, great work of historical fiction. This was the first Dan Simmons novel I've ever read, I'm excited to read the series he is known for (Hyperion Cantos). "

" Not my favorite Simmons but a good read. He takes the incredible true story about how Ernest Hemingway, living in Cuba in 1942, put together a ragtag spy group for the war effort and extrapolates from there. In an afterword he tells us which elements of the story were factual, and it's a lot more than you might expect. "
