Sixth-grader Milo Neal plans to do a science project on “The Complete Life Cycle of a Link in the Food Chain.” But when he brings his specimen—a baby chick—to class, everyone falls in love with the cute ball of fluff. Soon she has a name: Henrietta. Not only is Henrietta the class pet, she’s even chosen as mascot for the school hockey team! How can Milo finish his project, which calls for frying up his specimen and serving it to the judges of the science fair? Each day, as Henrietta gets bigger, so does Milo’s dilemma. And students are hatching plans to rescue their feathered friend. Gordon Korman, author of more than twenty books for middle school and young adult audiences, based this hilarious story on his own experiences while visiting a middle school classroom. Through the talented narrators’ performances, Henrietta’s adventures will have you cackling with laughter.

Quotes & Awards

  • “Korman once again successfully employs his tried-and-true formula: zany situations; a fast pace; likable, well-drawn characters; contemporary dialogue; and lots of humor.”

    School Library Journal

  • “Korman has the voices of these middle-school kids down cold…This is a genuinely funny, refreshingly unpretentious novel.”

About the Narrators

Johnny Heller, a two-time winner of the prestigious Audie Award, was named a top voice of 2008 and 2009 and selected as one of the Top 50 Narrators of the Twentieth Century by AudioFile magazine. His adult and children’s book narrations have earned him multiple AudioFile Earphones Awards.

Jeff Woodman is an actor and narrator. He is a winner of the prestigious Audie Award and a six-time finalist. He has received seventeen Earphones Awards and was named one of the Fifty Greatest Voices of the Century by AudioFile magazine. As an actor, he originated the title role in Tennessee Williams’ The Notebook of Trigorin and won the S.F. Critics’ Circle Award for his performance in An Ideal Husband. In addition to numerous theater credits on and off Broadway, his television work includes Sex and the City, Law & Order, and Cosby.

Robert Ramirez came to audiobook narration fresh from his MFA in classical theater. Initially answering a casting call for a narrator who spoke Spanish, Robert has used his Mexican-American background to imbue authentic flavor and dialogue in audio titles. His success with six young adult novels by Gary Soto has gotten our attention, including Taking Sides and Buried Onion. His powerful command of language and rich voice reflect his interest in dialects. In his recent performance of Beast by Donna Jo Napoli, a modern fable of “Beauty and the Beast” set in Persia, Robert jumped at the chance to add Farsi and Arabic to his repertoire. We hope to hear Robert in different audiobook venues in coming months.

Julie Dretzin is an actress, who has appeared in Breaking Bad and several motion pictures, including the film adaptation of Alex Flinn’s Beastly.

Barbara Caruso is an accomplished actress and critically acclaimed audiobook narrator. A graduate of London’s prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, she was a featured player in the Royal Shakespeare Company. She has played starring roles on Broadway and in theaters across the country. She won the Alexander Scourby Reader of the Year Award for her performances of young adult fiction, and has more than one hundred audiobook narrations to her credit.

L. J. Ganser is the winner of three AudioFile Earphones Awards and the 2005 Audie Award for Best Nonfiction Narration for his work in The Island at the Center of the World. He has appeared onstage in New York and in regional productions, has several episodes of Law & Order in his list of credits, and has recorded over two hundred audiobooks. Before becoming an actor, he was a ship’s cook in Maine, a roofer, a painter, and a swim team coach.

Ron McLarty is a veteran actor of television, film, and stage as well as an award-winning audiobook narrator. He has more than 100 television appearances to his credit, including as a series regular on Spencer for Hire and Law & Order. His film career began in 1977 with a performance in The Sentinel and continued with such films as The Postman, Flamingo Kid, and, most recently, How Do You Know? His stage credits include Broadway and other productions. He has narrated more than 100 audiobooks, earning eight Earphones Awards and recognition by AudioFile magazine as a Best Voice in Mystery & Suspense in 2009 and 2010. He has twice been a finalist for the prestigious Audie Awards and then won the award in 2001 for Best Mystery Narration. He is also an accomplished playwright and an acclaimed novelist.
