'At first glance it could have been anything - a stone, a knotted root - until you looked more closely. Thrusting out of the wet earth, its bones visible through rags of flesh, was a decomposing hand...'It was eight years ago that they found the body buried on the moor. They were certain that this was one of psychotic rapist and multiple murderer Jerome Monk's teenage victims. Which left just two more bodies to find? But the ill-conceived search ended badly. And with Monk safely behind bars, the momentum faltered. For forensics expert David Hunter, and those others who were part of the recovery team, life moved on. And the dead were left undisturbed.

Now, though, a nightmare scenario unfurls. Monk has escaped and seems to be targeting anyone involved in that original ill-fated operation. Lured back to the moors by a desperate call for help, Hunter begins to realise that neither the events unfolding now - nor those of eight years ago - are quite what they seem. And as the maniac's violent trail edges ever closer, the past is suddenly anything but dead and buried...

" I wasn't moved by this book, but it managed to keep my attention long enough to listen my way through it in audio form. It was written in a bit of a stuffy old english style which didn't help. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Nick | 2/6/2014

" A first for me in the series but it most certainly will not be my last. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Carol | 1/30/2014

" A good read from this talented writer but not as good as the previous books.I thought that Dr Hunter being written as less astute and professional in his job was a stretch. He had been portrayed in the previous books as a sharp academic with which little passed his notice. Partnered with the ability to sense a bad situation before it happened garnered respect and interest from the reader. This latest novel of his exploits reduces Dr. Hunter to a low that I hope won't be repeated. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Sangeeta | 1/25/2014

" An okay read. Nearly ditched it halfway because the characters were just so unlikeable! Not half as good as the earlier David Hunter books I've read. "

" Big fan of these David Hunter books. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Lani | 12/12/2013

" I love the David Hunter series. I particularly enjoy learning the details of David's life and becoming aware of just how human he is, with all his strengths and weaknesses laid bare. The forensic details added to the story and the solving of the crime itself make a fantastic story. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Tine | 11/5/2013

" Kind of disappointed - wasn't what I expected of a David Hunter story. No forensic details, too lame in the middle part of the book and quite predictable. Good moments at the end while solving some mysteries and relationships between the characters. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Peter-John Radcliffe | 11/3/2013

" Really enjoyed this David Hunter novel. Like other reviewers said some if the twists were viable before but I only guessed them and wasn't sure. Still a tense gripping read that I recommend to try. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Veronica | 8/28/2013

" Another good read. A little light on forensic detail this time, and it felt a bit too short. Not quite so much depth as the others in the series, but still a good read. "

" As usual a great storyline keeps the page turning, couldn't put it down! Set in an favourite area I love. Looking forward to the next installment!! x x "

" Simon Beckett's books really keep you turning the pages, he gets better with every book. I didn't mean to read this in a day but I couldn't put it down after the first fifty pages. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 David | 9/19/2012

" The ending seems to point to there being more of this series in the pipeline and I hope so because all so far have been enjoyable. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Donna Brown | 5/24/2012

" A very enjoyable novel. Fast-paced and a smooth read (or listen in my case!), believable characters and some unexpected twists. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Sammy Z | 3/31/2012

" Definitely the weakest in the series but I like how the author changes up from the same formula he used in the first 3 novels and turn this into less of a who done it to more of a cat and mouse novel. Still very enjoyable read "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Claire | 3/19/2012

" I hate it when I can predict the ending 20 odd pages in. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 4cats | 6/22/2011

" Disappointing, really enjoyed the first 3, felt this one was rather predictable, and falls into the trap of other serial killer novels where they all seem to have similar plotlines. "
