Life was good for the Walker family. They had a hundred acre farm with plenty of livestock to keep their family's lifestyle above everyone else in town. Johnny Walker stood six feet six inches tall but was as gentle as a kitten. Johnny's wife Elizabeth was by far the prettiest woman around. The Walker's had two beautiful children Sarah and Jimmy. The children grew up fast because their father was an ex-marine in the Vietnam War and believed in hard work and didn't want to raise lazy children on his farm.

Johnny was the town's butcher, always happy to supply their town with the best meat around. Local farmers would drive for miles just to get in on Johnny's secret, but Johnny wasn't about to give up his secret to no one. Jealousy and lust tore the family apart and Johnny's meat clever wasn't forgiving. If you know what I mean.

" "I know it's not thematically in tune with my new job and all, but I find it effective. Build a man a fire and he's warm for a day," I said. "But set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life. Tao of Pratchett. I live by it." -Harry Dresden, pg 52 "

" Just wow. Too much to even begin to write a review on, like most of Dresden's stories written by the incredible Jim Butcher it was a multi-leveled set of storylines drawn together by our favorite wizard and then run along an insane roller coaster ride from beginning to end with plenty of jaw dropping moments that made me gasp, curse and generally irritate anyone near me as I was reading. Just phenomenal and I can't believe I now have to wait for another book. CAN'T WAIT. GAH! "

" The best. In my iffy memory, I recall thinking I may be done with the series, but I could be imagining that. As I was flipping fast pages in this Harry Dresden book, I remembered how Harry always came close to frying himself completely, only to rally 'round one more time. Harry is now the Winter Knight, a title that brings with it more powerful foes, and a snazzier, wider wardrobe. But the Winter Knight has allies of his own. Butcher is smoother, the writing less strident, the enjoyment heightened. I laughed out loud. The banter between Harry and Thomas feels like I'm a phantom sibling witnessing. The fighting, burning, freezing, magicking, big ugly bad guy war stuff is good, but the character-creating prose is better. Just realized that the evil men get more squishy, inside-out and ugly, while the evil women get prettier. The writing's good enough that I'm okay with that. I look forward to the next Butcher knight's tale. "

" This was definitely a page turner. Jim Butcher has a knack for uploading tension and keeping the reader on the edge of her seat, wondering what could possibly happen next. And despite some of the non-so-pleasant things Harry Dresden has done (and does here), his reasons are clear and keep the reader's sympathy. This isn't literary fiction, but it's darn good fun. "

" I am completely in love with Dresden Files! Harry Dresden is one of my most favorite characters, he is complex, interesting, funny, awkward. His constant struggle to make the right choices, to do the "right thing" is written in such way that it just makes you want to read more. I can't wait for the next part, I'm very excited to see what Harry will do, how will his friends handle the "new" Harry. What of the island? I have so many questions! I can't wait for part 15! "

" Butcher delivers again, and in a big way. Excellent plot, with several satisfying 'big picture' moments about where the series is heading. Harry Dresden's character continues to grow, as does Butcher's ability to tell a story and a story within a story. "

" I think this is one of the best Dresden books yet. It did a great job of tying together plot lines from several of the earlier books. Now I can't wait for the next one to come out. "

" Dresden back from the dead and this time with the fate of the world on his shoulders. This series reminds me a lot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. You have a constantly evolving hero with his gang of misfit allies and now they're at the part where they deal with apocalyptic events "
