Philip Wardman had more than just the ordinary squeamishness where death was concerned. Yet he could hardly avoid the suspicious disappearance of his sister's friend Rebecca Neave, especially when everyone was ascribing the cause to murder.

Philip's feminine ideal is the statue of the Roman goddess Flora in his mother's garden. His marble Flora doesn't fade, doesn't alter, doesn't die. But then he meets Senta Pelham, a beautiful, sensual, childlike actress who flagrantly disdains the morals of society and passionately desires the elusive Philip.

" Psychological suspense novel. Was truly weird, but I had to keep reading. Loved it and hated it. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Elaine | 2/1/2011

" This is vintage Rendell. Not very smart leading man, diabolical leading lady, beautiful twist at the end. Definitely one of my very favorites in her prolific body of work. If you want to give Rendell a try, this is a great place to start. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Helen | 1/25/2011

" One of her most compelling suspense novels. The characters are so well drawn, the dialogue so natural, you really think you might know these people. But thank God you don't because ...Well, I'd better not say anything more. If you love psychological suspense, you will love Ruth Rendell. "

" Truly creepy. This has stayed with me for years, and in my opinion, is proof of the author's stunning versatility. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Amy | 9/20/2010

" This is a typical Ruth Rendell. Sharp, witty, clever, and there's always one character that's a bit too obsessive about someone. "

" I found this book to be creepy. Some of the characters were very twisted people. While it was somewhat slow moving and mildly repellant I found that I had to keep reading to the end. "

" A man obsessed with a statue, and then falls in love with an odd woman at his sister's wedding who looks exactly like the statue! Well-written, but bizarre. "
