In 1606, the grand city of Prague hides an ugly secret: the emperor's bastard son, Don Julius, is afflicted with a madness that pushes the prince to unspeakable depravity. Banished to a remote corner of Bohemia, Don Julius comes under the care of a bloodletter who works to purge the vicious humors coursing through the young royal's veins. When the prince meets the bloodletter's daughter Marketa, his madness sparks a frenzied - and dangerous - obsession. He believes Marketa embodies the women from the Coded Book of Wonder, a priceless manuscript from the imperial library that was the young prince's only link to sanity. As the prince descends further into the darkness of his mind, his acts become ever more desperate, and Marketa, both frightened and fascinated, can't stay away.

Inspired by a true murder that rocked the Hapsburg dynasty, The Bloodletter's Daughter is a dark and richly detailed saga of passion and revenge.

" I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The main characters are well developed, it is suspenseful, and narrative is easy to follow. I knew very little of the Hapsbergs in Bohemia before reading this novel. I would definitely recommend it to historical fiction lovers. "

" I am not completely done with it but I love it and can't wait to find out how it ends. I almost know all the places mentioned in the book personally and that makes it so much more fun to me. Awesome read!!! "

" I couldn't put this book down once I hit the halfway mark! I had to give it 5 stars because of that. I love this time period and it had been a long time since I've read something from it. This book had a great balance of emerging science, love, loyalty, darkness, and curiosity to keep me intrigued! This was a gift from my sister who knew I would love it! Thanks, Nette!! "

" Set in the early 1600s in Bohemia, The Bloodletter's Daughter is about Marketa, her role in her family and town and the intersection of her life with the "madman" son of the king. The story is compelling and enjoyable and is well worth the investment of time. "

" I enjoyed this book and it feel just a little short of a 4 star rating. Definitely worth reading but the plot didn't hold together quite as tightly as I would have liked. "

" I really Liked this book although I could go with out the over throwing the king bit as I felt the uncle character was unnecessary. "

" This is a light read, but enjoyable. I especially enjoyed the descriptions of the bathhouse, which were humorous and fun to imagine. Not too challenging, and somewhat predictable... yet somehow not a waste of time. "

" I loved this book. As a Chemist - a female Chemist in an industry that is still make dominated - I love stories about women from this time period who are interested in science. This was a fast read and I loved the reader notes at the end about the inspiration for the book. "

" I enjoyed the book, although I found certain aspects of it to be less-than-believable. The plot aside, it seemed in some ways--particularly with the depth of the characters--to be more of a young adult book. The setting was intriguing. "

" Found it interesting. I know very little about the 1600's and the time peaked my interest to explore what life was like in future years, 1700's, 1800's. Had heard of blood letting but did not have a full picture until I read this book. It was a good read. "
