For a sixteen-year-old boy out in the world alone for the first time, every day is an education in the hard work and boredom of migrant labor; every day teaches him something more about friendship, or hunger, or profanity, or lust — always lust. He learns how a poker game, or hitching a ride, can turn deadly. He discovers the secret sadness and generosity to be found on a lonely farm in the middle of nowhere. Then he joins up with a carnival and becomes a grunt, running a ride and shilling for the geek show. He’s living the hard carny life and beginning to see the world through carny eyes. He’s tough. Cynical. By the end of the summer he’s pretty sure he knows it all. Until he meets Ruby.

"I loved this book. Its a good story about a child of alchoholics who leaves them behind in search of a better life for himself. I only had one sticker with this book. has anybody read Tiltawhirl John? it sure seems a heck of alot like Beat Field, the main characters even run the same ride. Has anybody else noticed this?" — Jon (5 out of 5 stars)

" My first Gary Paulsen book...and come to find out it is partially based on his own experiences. Interesting. His style reminded me of Steinbeck's style. "

" This book kind of got inappropriate towards the end, but I liked it. The thing that frustrates me the most, though, is that I never learned the main characters name. "
" This book was all right "
" I wanted something easy to read and I thought this would be good since I've read the Hatchet and that was great. It turned out to be a total waste of time and it was really lame. I'm not really sure what the point of it was. "
" coming of age for boys. interesting ending, one the boys would like. "
