Publisher Description

In the aftermath of tragedy, life goes on - painful and forever altered, but ripe with new beginnings. For Julie Holt, travelling to the beautiful but ravaged coast of Biloxi, Mississippi, is a journey into a secret past, and a life she never expected....

Julie first knew loss at the age of 12, when her sister disappeared, never to be found. As her once close-knit family grew apart, Julie's mother obsessively searched for the girl, and when her mother died, Julie took up the search, never letting go of the hope. Then, at an art exhibition in New York, she meets Monica - a struggling artist and single mother who reminds Julie so much of her sister that she can't help feeling drawn to her: Monica paints a vivid picture of her family, but never says why or how she lost contact with them. And she has another secret: a heart condition that will soon take her life.

When Monica dies, Julie inherits from her an antique portrait - as well as custody of her young son. Taking him back to Biloxi and New Orleans to see the family he has never met, Julie discovers a connection of her own. The portrait, of an old relative, was done by her great-grandfather - and unlocks a family history she never knew.

"This book is written in a two person narrative, which I enjoyed. As the chapters unfolded, mysteries, tragedy and family secrets are exposed. The character development seemed a bit slow at first but eventually revealed the complex and diverse personalities of each of the players. The author has described a Post-Katrina New Orleans and Biloxi area beautifully and it left me with a new appreciation for the resiliency of the Southern people that call this place 'home'."

" I really liked this book-probably a "chick beach book" but a good story anyway. It involves several mysteries of disappearances and murder, a love story, and tragedy set against the background of the rebuilding of the Gulf coast after Katrina. "

" Haven't had a book in a while that I sat up late at night because I just HAD to finish it. Not a cliffhanger by any means, but just a really, really good read. In a different sort of way. "

" Great book, I'm a new fan of Karen White and can't wait to read more of her books. This book had two parallel stories that never really came together until the end, which I appreciated (I hate figuring out the mystery halfway through). I couldn't get through Julie's parts fast enough to get back to Aimee's story of the past. Great book and can't wait to read another. "

" 4.5 stars. Another winner from Karen White. I enjoyed the dual viewpoints, and I was equally engrossed by both Julie's and Aimee's stories. I loved the New Orleans/Biloxi settings, and, even though I figured out part of the mystery early, another part WAS a bit of a shocker. Well done! "
