Ananna of the Tanarau abandons ship when her parents try to marry her off to an allying pirate clan. But that only prompts the scorned clan to send an assassin after her. And when Ananna faces him down one night, armed with magic she doesn't really know how to use, she accidentally activates a curse binding them together. To break the curse, Ananna and the assassin must complete three impossible tasks all while grappling with evil wizards, floating islands, haughty manticores, runaway nobility, strange magic, and the growing romantic tension between them.

" Has all the makings of a great story but just didn't gel for me. Main character Ananna was alternately interesting and aggravating, and her voice drove me INSANE: things like "I ain't never seen no..." made me cringe constantly, especially since her voice wasn't consistent. I'd rather have read about Naji's life, quite frankly. Also, this book just sort of stops, with no resolution. I actually had to sit here and ponder whether I'd finished it or not. "

" Not a lot of character depth, but I'm not railing to get my time back either. "

" 3 stars...went in with expectations way too high. Enjoyed it for the most part but left wanting more from the story. More plot development, more background info, more character development, more relationship development...just more in general and it didn't happen. :( "

" Really, a 3.5. The cliff hanger ending put me off, but I liked the characters. More to come... "

" Pirates, magic, and a curse...what's not to love? This book started off with me LOVING it and ended pretty well although I thought the flow wasn't as great at the end. I am looking forward to the next one in the series and recommend this one for high school and up. "
