"I read several times when I was young because it was one of the books my grandma kept in my mom's old room where we used to stay overnight once in a while if my parents had to go somewhere. She also had the original Tarzan, the Bobbsey Twins and my favorite, a book called Maida's Little Village that I have never been able to find anywhere since. Pinocchio was Creepy and dark but very compelling. The Disney version was much different but it is interesting to compare the two ..." — Terri (4 out of 5 stars)

" A little bit different from the Disney version. A lot about what happens to bad little boys who do not listen to their elders. "
" Mostly boring, but it was, again, a time-killer. The morbid parts were cool. "
" This is my third time reading this book. It is a rare gem that many overlook because of the Disney movie. I highly recommend it to all. It has a lot more in it than the movie covers. It is very symbolic and even terrifying at times...really good stuff...one of my favorites. "
" Still quite readable today and SO much better than Disney!! This would make a terrific read aloud to young kids. "
" The life teaching story! The story that every child in the world,in all different language must have heard or read at least once in their lives. A must for ever child. "
" Ha, P squashes the Talking Cricket on page 15! In fact, P's such a jerky little puppet-kid this reads at times almost like a parody of Disney rather than the source material. "
" Read this to your kids! It's much better than the Disney version and it is a story they will remember forever. "
" I love the original pinocchio cuz he is violent!!! Pinocchio gets murdered, is a murderer and almost dies as well. SO READ THIS BOOK to find out who he kills, who kills him, THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, NOT DISNEY!!! So read pinocchio. "
" Great book and story. I really liked it as a child. But it's also a kind of frighting. That's why I think it's better than all those sweet fairy tales now. "
" I am not going to read this to my almost 4-year-old. Very dark, but very good. I enjoyed it, and think it would be good to read to an older child. Enough similarities to the Disney movie to be recognizable, but there are plenty of "wait...what?!" moments to keep them guessing. "
" I love the story although there are elements that seem somewhat ridiculous. A blue haired fairy? Sure. Whatever. But the woodcarver's trials are sad, and Pinocchio's struggles are truly moving. A great story and a satisfying ending. "
" Pinocchio was not only a liar, he was a murderer. "
" The story of Pinocchio was always a bit too depressing for me. "
" It was interesting to read this book after watching the Disney version. :). We really liked it. "
" I read this book several times between the ages of 6 and 10 before my mom finally threw it away (only because it was falling apart). "
" Um... it makes little sense other than "be good, or else"! I like that the fairy has azure hair. ^_^ But a lot of consistency errors, etc. I've read it before. Iiiiiiit's a page-turner! "
" I did not like reading this book at all. I'm not sure if it's because I read it as an adult instead of a kid or not but it was just a choir. I've never been fond of the story really so maybe it's just me. "
" I bought this book while in Italy - had NO idea the original had so many stories about Pinnochio! A very surprising read of a classic children's book. "
" An interesting and fun read. My 6 yr. old really liked it, despite it being slightly gruesome at times. Modern readers may object to so obvious a theme, but I find children respond well to a strong moral. I reccomend this book! "
" apparently my edition has no ISBN... "
" I am only a little bit into this one, but man did Disney edit. It's like reading a morbid and more interesting version of the animated movie! "
" I read this one out loud to my son. It was pretty fun. My four year old definitely enjoyed it. :) "
" Disney really edited this.... a cross between the gingerbread man (pinocchio) and the giving tree (geppetto) as near as I can tell, this version is not a retelling. compared with Rand McNally & Company 1939. skimmed the text and it appears the same :) "
" Not the edition we had when I was a child(50's) but close enough. I don't know that I'd recognize the cover even if it was in the lookup list. Some of my first book/look/reading experience. Date read is just approximate. "
" Awwww what a classic story of a wooden boy who just wants to be accepted I love reading this story as a kid and it never gets old even now! "
" full of lessons, humor and adventure "
" Interesting to read the original Pinnochio story but I got bored after 50 pages. Perhaps it was because I already knew what was going to happen, but I lost interest. "
" I was pleasantly surprised by this classic piece of children's literature. It opens up a lot of dialogue with children about moral issues. "
" I had never read the real story and was surprised by how different it is than the Walt Disney version. In the book it takes Pinocchio much longer to become a good boy and he is also blatantly naughty in the book as opposed to being deceived into being naughty in the movie. "
" My my. Such a naughty boy.. "
" On the whole, this has to be the least satisfying classic I've read over the past couple of months. I genuinely disliked nearly every character in the book, with special emphasis on Pinocchio. I was rooting for the fireplace rather than the real boy angle. "
" This is now one of my FAVORITE childrens books! This book teaches so much about life, has symbolism, and moves quickly. Everyone would run to hear this when it was time to read! "
