Publisher Description

The Adventure of the Speckled Band is the 8th of 12 stories collected in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. It was originally published in Strand Magazine in 1892. Doyle thought that this was his best Holmes story. In fact, he thought so much of it that he wrote and produced a play based on the story. The play, originally called The Stonor Case, differed from the story in several details but was essentially the same.

"I enjoyed this book concerning Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson coming to the aid of a young girl, who is in fear for her life. Her sister has died for no reason, and she fears she is next. This was one of my favorite stories, and made it to his TV series. A very good read for all of Mr. Holmes fans."

" Another enjoyeable read. I feel like almost anything I would have to say would give away the plot - and I don't want to do that - so I will just say I enjoyed this and thought the ending was satisfying. "

" Sinister dealings and Holmes in action! The Speckled Band gets Sherlock Holmes out of his Baker Street residence for a night and shows that he's quick in more ways than one. This may have been the very first Holmes story I ever read if I'm remembering correctly and it was a joy to read again! "

" An excellent story. In this story, you'll find both action and mystery. Several of the Holmes-stories are quite easy to figure out early on, not so here. I got involved with the characters, and had to really think to figure it out. "

" It wasn't as good as I expected. Some of the stories were good, but nothing extraordinary. The most annoying part of the short stories were the circumlocutions, and the overmistificated status and case-solved skilles of Sherlock Holmes. "
