Glen Garber, a contractor, has seen his business shaken by the housing crisis, and now his wife, Sheila, is taking a business course at night to increase her chances of landing a good-paying job. But she should have been home by now. With their eight-year-old daughter sleeping soundly, Glen soon finds his worst fears confirmed: Sheila and two others have been killed in a car accident. Grieving and in denial, Glen resolves to investigate the accident himself—and begins to uncover layers of lawlessness beneath the placid surface of their Connecticut suburb, secret after dangerous secret behind the closed doors. Propelled into a vortex of corruption and illegal activity, pursued by mysterious killers, and confronted by threats from neighbors he thought he knew, Glen must take his own desperate measures and go to terrifying new places in himself to avenge his wife and protect his child.

"Linwood Barclay is a new author to me, but one I'll look for in the bookstores. On the accident is a book set in a typical Connecticut suburb, about a typical family and their friends. The main character, Glen Garber is a contractor struggling to make ends meet in a time of recession. The book opens with two tourists being killed by their apparently random appearance at a knock-off shop for imitation purses. Next Garber's wife Sheila is involved in an accident where she and two others are killed. She is found to be drunk and at fault. The town turns against her family which includes her innocent 8 year old daughter. In grief Glen tries to shield her and find solace for this inexplicable lose. His wife never got drug. The story escalates from there with layer after layer being peeled off the lives of his apparently innocent friends and co-workers. Bodies multiply. The mystery of what is going on and who killed who continues to the end. A good read."

" I really like Linwood Barclay's books, and not just because I've been reading his work since he wrote for The Toronto Star. It's mostly because his wife Neetha's an amazing teacher in Halton:) Really though, he takes always seems to take an ordinary, middle class family and has weird, mysterious but truly believable events happen to them. Great writing! "

I wanted to finish to find out why people were murdered and who done it, but it just got more and more weird. Not a book that I would recommend to anyone! "
