" If I had to choose between reading a Dan Brown book and reading this installment of the 39 Clues, I would definitely pick this book. The historical mystery at the heart of the book won't be news to anyone who's already had 9th-grade world history, but for the target audience it's satisfyingly creepy. We're still making the rounds of secret Cahill fortresses, there are new vehicles to drive without licenses, and the plot thickens nicely. "

" I have to say that this is the best 39 Clues book thus far, but it still only gets three stars. I liked the way Patrick Carman made our protagonists team up with a previously hated group of antagonists. It added a sense of dread (will they be double-crossed?) and a sense of surprise (I had no idea I would actually like those characters). I must say that I wondered several times if Carman stayed true to the character traits that the others before him had painted for this particular crew because they seemed too soft from how they had been portrayed before. "

" I really didn't like Amy and Dan working together with the Holts in this one, although I recognized that it was necessary for the plot line. I'm also a little sad that Nellie seems to be either written out or working for the other side. I liked her :( But on the other hand, it was kind of nice to have Amy and Dan working on their own, so I have mixed feelings about the absence of Nellie in this book. I really liked the addition of Nataliya though. I thought the Anastasia story line was really neat. "

" The Russian adventure was cool! And now they have a new ally, I hope she's really on their side unlike that old woman from Egypt. Anyway I'm glad that in this book we get to explore the other characters, I mean the author really gave Hamilton some depth there or something & Irina actually has a soft side? Also, the man in black, is he really an enemy? "

" This book takes place in Russia. Kids team up with Hamilton Holt because they need to get clues all over the country in a limited time frame. You meet a person who is a powerful ally of the kids. Funny and action-packed. Interesting historical tidbits about Rasputin and the Romanov family. "

" What a disappointment! This is my least favorite of the 39 clues so far. It is the weakest of them all, which is such a shame since it takes place in Russia. It had such potential to be really good and really cool, but this author didn't live up to the task. Shame on you P. Carman. "
