"Though it's been forever since I've read this (like back in high school), I remember thoroughly enjoying it. Even though it's incredibly depressing."

" Reminded me a lot of The Song of Roland. Long battle scene with lots of names, lots of killing, but not much of a narrative. I know that Gogol was trying to recreate a Cossack folk tale here, but it seems that he wasn't all that concerned with the strength of the plot. "

" Full of mad battle scenes and Cossack ethics; completely different to much of Gogol's work, but a good yarn nonetheless. "

" Yet another great book from Gogol, the best writer I've found so far about Ukrainian cosacks and their life (and war) style. "
