It's the summer of 1960 and in the small town of Elm Haven, Illinois, five twelve-year-old boys are forging the powerful bonds that a lifetime of change will not break. From sunset bike rides to shaded hiding places in the woods, the boys' days are marked by all of the secrets and silences of an idyllic childhood. But amid the sun-drenched cornfields, their loyalty will be pitilessly tested. When a long-silent bell peals in the middle of the night, the townsfolk know it marks the end of their carefree days. From the depths of the Old Central School, a hulking fortress tinged with the mahogany scent of coffins, an invisible evil is rising. Strange and horrifying events begin to overtake everyday life, spreading terror through the once-peaceful town. Determined to exorcize this ancient plague, Mike, Duane, Dale, Harlen, and Kevin must wage a war of blood against an arcane abomination who owns the night....

Listener Opinions

" "Summer of Night" is scary and suspensful, and in its intrepid-kids-in-danger approach he out-Kings Stephen. Rendering trucks have never been so scary. Simmons goes a bit over the top in his climax, switching from relatable if horrific creepiness to boffo horrorshow fireworks, but this is an excellent horror novel. It's long and detailed, but worth the weight. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Justin Crotty | 1/20/2014

" A classic old school, small town, best buddy ghost story. A classic. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Ryan Jackson | 1/5/2014

" distrurbing and scary. very Stephen King-esque, but with its own unique voice and bag of spooks. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Victor | 10/30/2013

" Gave it 4 stars, but it should probably be 3.5. Simmons is a great writer, and up until the final 50 pages or so its a moody, atmospheric and creepy book. The ending was kind of a letdown, though. I was expecting something a little more detailed and exciting. I still recommend it, though. "

" Reminded me a bit of IT by Stephen King. Simmons is a great writer but his talents exceed the material here. "

" A wonderful read!! This book was very suspenseful and exciting. I loved every minute of it. The characters are wonderfully relatable and I found myself getting very attached to them. The author is also not afraid to take risks, like killing off people the reader may love. No one is safe!! "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Nancy | 8/7/2013

" Loved it... Just wish that the "mystery" had changed to the horror story it was billed as earlier than halfway thru the 600 page book. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Carol | 7/10/2013

" Frightening at times. With the coming-of-age of the main characters, who are unforgetable, it reminds me of Stephen King's "The Body". "

" I just don't really enjoy horror. I thought I'd try this out because I like Dan Simmons, and the characters were done well, but ultimately I don't find the genre interesting. Which means my rating is not really anything to go on if you are a horror fan. "

" Once again, Simmons impresses me. The children are well-written (not always an easy task), the suspense/horror is suitably scary, the mystery is compelling. Definitely worth your time. "

" This book uses about every kid's nightmare on file:something grabbing you under the bed, ghosts, undead, all of it. A very ambitious epic that is hard to get a good grasp on until about halfway through, then when there is a very unexpected death, it takes off like a rocket. "
