Publisher Description

My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk. I'm a wizard. I work out of an office in midtown Chicago. As far as I know, I'm the only openly practicing professional wizard in the country. You can find me in the yellow pages, under Wizards. Believe it or not, I'm the only one there.

With rent past due and a decent meal becoming an issue of some importance, Harry needs work, and soon. A call from a distraught wife, and another from Lt Murphy of the Chicago PD Special Investigation Unit makes Harry believe things are looking up, but they are about to get worse, much worse. Someone is harnessing immense supernatural forces to commit a series of grisly murders. Someone has violated the first law of magic: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Tracking that someone takes Harry into the dangerous underbelly of Chicago, from mobsters.

"Having seen the TV show before listening to the audiobooks, I can say I have enjoyed both. Well, the first book anyway. I am giving it 4 stars mostly in the hope that the groundwork that has been laid here is expanded on in the next books. I won't have to stay in suspense long because they have already been released, and though I do feel a bit guilty... I will make good on it by saying I will adjust to 5 stars if the following books satisfy."

" 3.5 stars. Overall enjoyable read. Mildly suspenseful, often humorous. I kept reading after the introduction of a vampire...that says a lot. I'm a sucker for the noir style. "

" Good intro book. Not stellar, but the ideas are there to develop, good basic knowledge of the magical sphere made for decent realism. Good enough to make me want to read Book 2, Fool Moon. "

" There are a lot of Dresden books on my shelf, I recommend them all, and I don't think it's necessary to review each one. Just read this book. If you like it, you'll like the others. If you hate it, well, it's still better than what's on 499 of those 500 channels your TV gets. "

" If I have developed a perverse weakness for urban fantasy, it is largely Jim Butcher's fault. His, and the Sci-Fi channel's adaptation, and the airport bookstore only gave me the choice of this or Sarah Palin's book to kill a cross-country flight's worth of nicotine fits. "
