Vladimir Alekseyevich Gilyarovsky (1853-1935), prominent journalist and writer, was considered the golden pen of Russian journalism in his time. Stories of the Slum collects a number of his essays discussing the time he spent travelling through Moscow's world of poverty and crime. The first edition of the book, published in 1887, was immediately censored by the Russian government. Had they instead heeded Gilyarovsky's call to warning, the Russian government may have been able to avoid the calamitous financial and political turmoil the country later endured.
