A memoir of an extraordinary family - unexpectedly poor and forced to live on their wits amidst 1970s South African affluence. Tim Ecott's story is at times poignant, funny, affecting and moving. It's also more than a little bizarre.

"Love it, devoured it over one weekend and the characters stayed with me ever after. One of the best memoirs I have ever read. "

" Same time period identification, enjoying every page, new insights from early years, things forgotten laughingly and shamefully remembered. "

" This book had the appearance that it was about growing up in South Africa as a British migrant. The book was lucky if 50% of it covered living in Africa, in fact the author seemed to spend little of his childhood in Africa, and more in Ireland and Malaysia. Dull and dry at best. "
