From New York Times bestselling author James Luceno comes an all-new Star Wars adventure that reveals the action and intrigue unfolding directly before Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

Mired in greed and corruption, tangled in bureaucracy, the Galactic Republic is crumbling. In the outlying systems, where the Trade Federation maintains a stranglehold on shipping routes, tensions are boiling over?while back in the comfort of Coruscant, the hub of civilized space and seat of the Republic government, few senators seem inclined to investigate the problem. And those who suspect Supreme Chancellor Valorum of having a hand in the machinations are baffled?especially when Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi foil an assassination attempt on the Chancellor.

With the crisis escalating, Valorum calls for an emergency trade summit. As humans and aliens gather, conspiracies sealed with large sums of money run rampant, and no one is entirely above suspicion. But the greatest threat of all remains unknown to everyone except three members of the Trade Federation who have entered into a shadowy alliance with a dark overlord. While the trio will be content with more money and fewer problems, Darth Sidious has grander, far more terrifying plans.

It is a time that tests the mettle of all those who strive to hold the Republic together?none more so than the Jedi Knights, who have long been the galaxy's best hope for preserving peace and justice. Yet despite their most valiant efforts, the meeting will explode into fiery chaos beyond everyone?s worst fears . . .

" Sort of convoluted and dull. "

" Not being a big fan of the prequels, I put off reading this for a while. I was pleasantly surprised when I finally got around to reading it. It was well written, had some good action, and added a whole new level of understanding to what was going on in the galaxy right before Episode 1. "

" This is a boring book. I guess it's cool set up for episode I, but I find a few of the main characters just kind of dreadfully boring. Oh, and the story line about that one dude's girlfriend leaving and then coming back just to die is terrible and needs to never happen in a book ever. It's so bad. "

" This book was kind of confusing. The used HUGE words way to much. But overall it was a great Star Wars book. "

" As I finally go through the Star Wars books chronologically, this was an interesting take on the pre-Phantom Menace time. Shows a lot of the tension and back story of the Supreme Chancellor that you don't get in Phantom. It's OK. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Stephan Randle | 8/20/2012

" If Supreme Chancellor Valorum takes up the most space on the cover of the Star Wars novel you're about to read, it's probably going to be lame. And yes, it was pretty lame. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Amber | 5/12/2011

" Cloak of Deception was just okay for a Star Wars book. It focused too much on the politics for me, though seeing glimpses of OT characters like Tarkin was neat. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Eric | 9/29/2010

" Jacen solo completely loses any appeal at all in this book. I loved one of Kyp's faction pulling a bone head stunt like he does, but you gotta respect the follow thru. Not a bad book in all, at times made me want to pull my hair out but all in all not bad. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Lindsey | 2/26/2010

" Not really very good, but necessary for later New Jedi Order developments. Like its immediate predecessor, it's only for Star Wars fans who are looking to read the whole New Jedi Order series. "
