Hugo Award-winning author Timothy Zahn made his triumphant return to the Star Wars universe in this first of an epic two-volume series in which the New Republic must face its most dangerous enemy yet: a dead Imperial warlord.

The forces of the Empire stand at the brink of total collapse. But they have saved their most heinous plan for last. First a plot is hatched that could destroy the New Republic in a bloodbath of genocide and civil war. Then comes the shocking news that Grand Admiral Thrawn, the most cunning and ruthless warlord in history, has apparently returned from the dead to lead the Empire to a long-prophesied victory. Facing incredible odds, Han and Leia begin a desperate race against time to prevent the New Republic from unraveling in the face of two inexplicable threats: one from within and one from without. Meanwhile, Luke teams up with Mara Jade, using the Force to track down a mysterious pirate ship with a crew of clones.

Yet perhaps most dangerous of all are those who lurk in the shadows, orchestrating a dark plan that will turn the New Republic and the Empire into their playthings.

" I almost didn't read this because the potential for jumping the shark was massive. But I'm so, so glad that I did. I even got to meet the author a few years ago (I might have swooned). He was super nice, & autographed it to me & The Other Boy, who at the time was almost two years old. "

" So I got on a kick and read al out every Star Wars novel. The Zahn books were my favorites. They're not Alderan-shattering, but they're fun. That's enough for me. "

" Started out as 'eh' but got to 'damn you Star Wars, now I have to read the next book.' "

" This trilogy is as good as the original movies. This is as good as it gets for Star Wars books. "

" I'll let this review speak for the whole 'Thrawn' trilogy. When I was done reading all three, the only thing I could think of was how badly I wished these were made into sequels as opposed to the contradictory, cartoonish, franchise ruining prequels that wound up getting made instead. Timothy Zaun managed to extend the story line of the original 'Star Wars' trilogy in a very unique, creative way that stayed true to the original, as well as adding new depth and characters that grew the universe even wider. The story line was broad and entertaining, and wove together perfectly. All three books were very well done, and do justice to those of us nerdy enough to know more than we should. If you prefer the 'Wars' to the 'Trek', then you owe it to yourself to read the 'Thrawn' trilogy. "

" Nostalgia reading! Also - the end of the book is actually at 75% of the kindle edition and then the rest is guides to the SW universe. "

" Excellent. Must read for Star Wars geeks. A more formidable bad guy than either Darth Vader (I know ... sacrilege) or the Emperor. Really well written and fun. "

" This was an awesome Star Wars series. The dude who wrote it writes really well for being a sci fi writer. "

" One of the better authors of the Star Wars genre, with action and scope, a good grasp of canon and a willing depth and new storyline material that meshes well with the universe they must measure up to. "

" 4*'s, very well written. But I'm left with so many questions. This type of Sci-Fi is not my usually type of read, but I very much enjoyed it. I've got the next two books in the seires lined up to read. "

" [audiobook via audible.com] . . . one of the things I love about this book, so far, is the fact that it is more like a one-man radio drama than a mere narration, complete with background music and sound effects! "

" The ending picked up again, and made it a worthwhile book to finish, but this was definitely not as good as the other Star Wars books by Timothy Zahn. "

" Specter of the Past and Vision of the Future aren't quite as good as the original Heir to the Empire trilogy, but they are still among the best Star Wars novels I've read. Zahn knows how to make the Star Wars universe sing. "

" Another exciting book by Timothy Zahn. The second part in the series, an action packed story of how Han, Luke and Leia are finally able to defeat the "Hand of Thrawn." "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Kelly | 5/7/2009

" Here's the thing- I read this when I was 13. I don't remember much about it (a lot of action and general gripping thrillingness) except for one scene, but I remember that scene word for word. Probably because I am incredibly sappy. "
