"It has been so long since I laughed out aloud reading a book. Spike Milligan is hilarious. I kept my daughter awake for nights on end - we shared a bed while her dad was away. She asked me to read out what I was reading but didn't quite "get it". She is only 12 but my guess is that humour is different for everyone. I loved his one-liners, his suggestion to a friend that they form a band. When his friend points out there are only two of them his solution, "We'll sit a long way apart!" Just loved it. A genius. I must read more of his works now. Highly recommended."

" How can you not enjoy Spike Milligan? He represents a class of English/Irish man that is fast diminishing. This book is the perfect antidote to the harsh facts of war and show's exactly what got the every day men through it.. humour. What I love about Spike Milligan(and others of his ilk) is the irreverence, surrealism and the fact they highlight that, essentially, everything in life is ridiculous. All hope could be lost, only for the laughing. "

" Hilarious book. I gave myself a stitch in the side sometimes. But my enjoyment was tainted by some racist undertones in the narrative . I was disappointed to discover that Milligan was actually well known to be a racist. But an enjoyable read nonetheless. "

" One of the few things I miss about my ex-husband is his collection of Spike Milligan books; read this one whilst I was pregnant & doing a good impression of a beached whale & it made me laugh to much I nearly went into early labour. "

" Spike's introductory book is fun and makes an engaging read. You can tell he's feeling his way but this naivety is quite charming. Memorable characters are introduced, which helps when the subsequent volumes are read. "

" A very funny book, and how did we ever win, going by that reference of life in the Army. Spikes back chat to his superiors must have got him into more trouble than that surly. If I got my bearings right the school in Turkey Road, where he was stationed at is now a housing estate. "
