Publisher Description

Space Captain Smith is the first book of the Chronicles of Isambard Smith. It's the 25th Century and the British Space Empire faces the gathering menace of the evil ant-soldiers of the Ghast hive, hell bent on galactic domination and the extermination of all humanoid life forms.

Captain Isambard Smith is the square-jawed, courageous and somewhat asinine new commander of the clapped out freighter John Pym, destined to take on the alien threat because nobody else is available. Together with his bold crew - a skull-collecting alien lunatic, an android pilot who is actually a fugitive sex toy and a hamster called Gerald - he must collect new-age herbalist Rhianna Mitchell from the New Francisco orbiter and bring her back to the Empire in safety. Straightforward enough - except the Ghasts want her too and, in addition to a whole fleet of Ghast warships, Smith has to confront void sharks, a universe-weary android assassin and John Gilead, psychopathic naval officer from the fanatically religious Republic of Eden before facing his greatest enemy: a ruthless alien warlord with a very large behind....

"Not at all what I was expecting but very pleasantly surprised. I had assumed this was going to be a more steampunk in space type book and in some ways it is. Captain Smith is almost a stereotype of the repressed Victorian Englishman and so obviously above Johnny foreigner that you want to pat him on the head and say "yes dear". His crew of a renegade sex android and an alien warrior who is straight out of the pages of Burroughs, combine in a book that riffs pop culture references throughout. Very entertaining"

" This book made me laugh out loud. That doesn't happen very often. I made my bf put down the book he was reading and read it right after I did. If I had waited I would have ruined the book by reading him all the funny bits, which would have been most of the book. I loved it, and loved the writing, the characters, and was impressed the with sheer amount of silly sexual innuendo. This book is Brilliant! "

" Didn't start very well. The writing lacked confidence and some of the humour fell a little flat for me. However it is his first book and as it continued it improved steadily; the writing more confidant and the humour more laugh out loud. "

" Not a great piece of literature or satire, but a fun read. Some hilarious innuendo and skewering of all sorts of stereotypes, with some nudge, nudge, wink, wink, references to great works of sci-fi. "

" I've given up two thirds of the way through. I don't know what I expected, but it wasn't this... Juvenile humour and knob jokes? No thanks. When I hit the crushingly unfunny Matrix/Cyberpunk parody section, I dumped it. Not for me. "

" I learned what i had long suspected...that i don't like comedy Sci-Fi, and especially not when it's pretty badly written and doesn't appeal to my sense of humour. Others have given this book good reivews, so i'm guessing it's just not to my taste - I thought it was absolute pants. "

" This is a parody of space opera and SF in general. It is fun a chapter or two but then it turns out it is just a endless numbers of oh so funny references to movies and books... "
