You couldn't really tell about Mama's brain just from looking at her, but it was obvious as soon as she spoke. She had a high voice, like a little girl's, and she only knew 23 words. I know this for a fact, because we kept a list of the things Mama said tacked to the inside of the kitchen cabinet. Most of the words were common ones, like good and more and hot, but there was one word only my mother said, soof.

Although she lives an unconventional lifestyle with her mentally disabled mother and their doting neighbor, Bernadette, Heidi has a lucky streak that has a way of pointing her in the right direction. When a mysterious word in her mother's vocabulary begins to haunt her, Heidi's thirst for the truth leads her on a cross-country journey in search of the secrets of her past.

" well done. a few parts brought me to tears. read it in one night, after being intrigued by my 9 year old daughter's discussion of and descriptions of this book from her enrichment program. it was fun to talk with my daughter about a book we've both read and had serious thoughts about. very cool. "

" So B. It is a life changing tale for Heidi It. Yes It ids her last name at least she thinks. Heidi's tale earned 5 stars easily. Heidi is 12 years old and lives in Reno, Nevada. Her mother is mentally challenged and can not take care of her so her loving neighbor Bernadette takes care of Heidi and her mother in this part i felt a great connection in this part I have two wonderful neighbors that would do anything for us. Heidi doesn't mind knowing not knowing anythng about her self until soof comes into her life. Soof is one of the 23 words her mother knows. Soof haunts Heidi in her dreams and every day thoughts Sarah Weeks described this part very well like as if you were being haunted by the word as if you were the character. In one of Heidi's homeschooled lessons she stumbles upon a roll of film she gets the film developed and finds pictures of her mother and a sign that says Hilltop Home. She shows her mother the pictures and her mother says soof but Heidi can not get her to say what soof is. Heidi decides she has to go to Hilltop home to learn about her past. So B. It is a life changing book it makes you wonder what it would feel like to not know anything about yourself. I would recomend this book to anyone who likes adventure and mystery. So B. It is a heart filled tale that would be a great summer read. This book can be found at any library or bookstore under Sarah Weeks. "
