Lying in the ambulance, jockey Willie Leigh, fallen from his horse at the Henessey Gold Cup, knows he was unconscious before he hit the ground. DCI Glass realises this was no accident but part of a big scam operating at racecourses across the country.
Meanwhile, DCI Knox is working undercover on the trail of an international drugs ring with connections in the pop music business. Posing as Jeremy Rowlands, a record promoter, he sets off on a nationwide promotion tour with American superstar Shula Sun in an effort to track down the men behind it.
The two trails converge in the Cotswolds, as more lives are lost, before a dramatic climax at the Grand National at Aintree.
