Publisher Description

Ludwig Horace Holly, a Cambridge professor, travels to Africa with his adopted son Leo to investigate the death of Kallicrates, Leo's ancestor, who was murdered by an unknown woman centuries before.

They encounter the Amahagger, a fierce tribe of cannibals who live in the caves of Kôr, a huge burial ground of an ancient civilisation decimated by plague.

The tribe are ruled over by She-who-must-be-obeyed [Ayesha], a mysterious and ruthless Queen who has the secret of eternal life while still possessing the beauty and radiance of a young woman. She has lived, virtually alone, for 2,000 years awaiting the return of her lover Kallicrates, whom she killed in a fit of jealous rage. When Ayesha sees Leo she believes him to be the reincarnation of the man who spurned her. A bewitching temptress, naively flirtatious but capable of horrific acts of malevolence, she will not be thwarted a second time. They will both bathe in the Eternal Flame before their marriage!

Not without sudden flashes of humour She is an intriguing story set in the 'Dark Continent' with a mix of sex and the supernatural which thrilled the Victorians and still - one hundred years later - continues to enthral.

"If you don't mind a classic tale, this is for you. It didn't go down the way I expected, nor did it leave me unfulfilled. It is an adventure, laced with lust that isn't what you think. Like the narrator in the story says, you would have to know me to believe me. I love written prose, and have a slight fetish for the Victorian, Shakespearean, and Regency time periods. This suits all of my needs with a tad of romance thrown in."

" I don't usually get into 19th century novels about aristocratic adventurers and "savages." But with a main character called "She Who Must Be Obeyed," how could I resist. I actually quite enjoyed this and its an easy read. "

" Kind of like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, only with unlikable characters and next-to no action. Although quite predictable, SHE is not bad for a pulp adventure novel--it just hasn't aged well mostly due to its extreme political incorrectness and clunky, King James-style prose. I can see how this would have been an exciting, ominous read a hundred years ago, but now it mostly just feels melodramatic and wordy. She's ultimate demise sure is effectively gruesome, though... "

" Read this one after I saw the movie, and enjoyed it. I'm a bit of a sucker for that whole Lost World thing, like the stuff ERB and Jules Verne used to do, so I kind of fell right into this book. I also love the femme fatale thing and the love triangle; it's all classic manipulative stuff that just keeps working every time. "

" Curious experience reading this for 2nd time after 40 year gap and how still some scenes were able to jump back into my memory. It must have made an impression on me as an 11 year old as I remember impatiently waiting for the sequel to arrive at the public library, of which now I can only recollect that it had a striking purple cover. " I'm sure it was startling and astonishing when published in 1887, but having grown up on fantasy and scifi I found it a yawner. In historical context, the novel is amazing. As general reading... not so amazing. For scholars studying the burst of otherworldly fiction during the Victorian era this is a very important book. For the casual reader... you'll be disappointed. Imagine an evil Wonder Woman and you have the antagonist. Of course in the male dominated world of Victoriana (remember, suffrage hadn't happened yet) the Uberwoman had to die... "

" This doesn't maintain the exciting narrative pace I experiences while reading 'King Solomon's Mines.' But it is nevertheless noteworthy for its representation of philosophy, race, spirituality/reincarnation, and gender. In particular, the depiction of a matriarchal society with a powerful female ruler fascinated me to no end. "

" Dashing, mysterious, so very Victorian. It's a little disheartening to continually read books that insist a woman's worth is only as great as her physical beauty. But I guess we need to be lenient when it comes to tradition. "
