Publisher Description

For generations the misty Shadowline has marked the boundary between the lands of men and the lost northern lands that are the lair of their inhuman enemies, the ageless Qar. But now that boundary line is moving outward, threatening to engulf the northernmost land in which humans still live — the kingdom of Southmarch. For centuries, the Eddon family has ruled in ancient, forbidding Southmarch Castle, guarding the border against the Qar's return, but now this powerful royal line has been dealt a devastating blow. The monarch, King Olin, is being held captive in a distant land, and it falls to his inexperienced heirs to lead their people in a time of growing danger and dread. It is on the two youngest Eddons that the heaviest burdens fall. The twins Barrick and Briony, who in such evil times have only each other, may lose even that bond as darkness closes over them. As the Qar’s power reaches out across their land, will Southmarch Castle, the only home they’ve ever known, become in fact what it has long been called — Shadowmarch?

"I really enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. Tad Williams has me hooked on another series. I wouldn't say it is as good as his Otherland series but I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy series. The story line is very engaging. It isn't overly filled with detail and sometimes it feels like things are glossed over but over all it is a pretty good book."

" Williams finally finished this series so I can go ahead and read it! I enjoyed this book. Williams did an excellent job with his world creation especially the mysterious Qar. I loved reading about Chert and Vansen, who are the most sympathetic characters in the book. "

" I've read a previous series by this author and really enjoyed it. Williams books tend to be a little heavy and there are a few differnet plot lines going through out this book. But I have read through it fairly quickly and can't wait to read the next in the series. "

" Very, very slow to get moving. This is a world building book. Mr Williams is setting up the characters and the world for us. If this was a standalone book, I would probably hate it, but I understand it's purpose and the payoff looks to be worth it. "

" An excellent complex fantasy story - one of his best series. Many different plot lines and characters, but he has the knack of always keeping you aware of what's happening - never got lost or confused. Great read! "

" Yup, about 2 years behind on this one, but your typical Tad Williams fantasy epic: somewhat standard and cliched, but still keeps you interested. Too bad it takes him 10 years to finish a series. "

" I'm not big on endings. There always feels like there's more to be told. A great story altogether though and nicely wrapped up for the most part. Wishin there was more, though. That Flint could have a series all his own, I'm thinking. "

" I found the ending of this series just a tad too predictable, but worth the trip. There was one significant twist near the ending that I didn't see coming, where Williams played quite nicely with the readers expectation of how epic fantasy is supposed to work to set them up for a nice reveal. " Another no-objectivity book in a no-objectivity series, as in I have no way to objectively assess them - they just hit all the right buttons.I didn't like them as much as Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, but otherwise gobbled them up happily. "

" meh! (sorry Tad!) too many descriptions of battle, too many poorly delineated characters, too little of the witty repartee that I have to to expect of this author. It's sad when I am glad to be finished with a series, rather than wanting more. Bring back Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn! "

" The Shadowmarch series ends strongly with the loose ends being tied up. It is a good story, easy to read, albeit slightly drawn out. The characters go through their evolution's as expected, and almost as predicted from book 1. "

" A satisfying ending to a good series. In all, I really loved the complex world Williams created, especially the fairy type creatures and the mythology. I still liked the 3rd book the best, but I was not let down by this and blew through it a few days after getting it for Christmas... "
