Publisher Description

Thousands of years ago the gods fought and fell in the deeps beneath what is now Southmarch Castle, then were banished into eternal sleep. Now at least one of them is stirring again, dreaming of vengeance against humankind. Southmarch haunts the dreams of men as well as gods. Royal twins Barrick and Briony Eddon, the heirs of Southmarch’s ruling family, are hurrying back home as well: Barrick now carries the heritage of the immortal Qar inside him, and Briony has a small army at her back and a fiery determination to recover her father’s throne and revenge herself on the usurpers. The cruel and powerful southern ruler known as the Autarch of Xis wants the power of the gods for his own, a power he can only gain if he conquers Southmarch. And nobody knows what the Qar want, only that the mysterious fairy - folk are prepared to die for it — or to kill every living thing in Southmarch Castle and in all the lands around. It will come to an apocalyptic conclusion on Midsummer Night, when the spirits of the haunted past and the desperate struggles of the present come together in one great final battle. Many will die. Many more will be transformed out of all recognition, and the world will be forever changed.

"Workmanlike fantasy saga, does what it says on the tin: takes you away to a completely different world that isn't actually any better than the one you already have but at least is more picturesque and contains real working magic. The only issue is that either Tad Williams has been reading too much George R. R. Martin, or I have. There are distinct similarities to A Song of Ice and Fire which is kind of distressing because unlike Martin, Williams doesn't come naturally to the torture, rape, intrigue and all gory death thing. Therefore, this is not the best thing ever and in fact it's not as good as his Dragonbone Chair epic but then I don't think he's ever done anything as good as that before or since. All this is kind of damning with faint praise and I feel bad - these are far from bad books. They're fine. They're absorbing and long and, well, workmanlike fantasy saga."

" Decent and mostly well-written, but it doesn't cover much new ground compared to other books Tad Williams has written. Some characters that appeared seemed a bit sudden/random and things that happened seemed a little too pat at times, to the point it might have been good if Mr. Williams' editor had been a bit more stern with him. A solid fantasy series, but nothing exceptional, and the ending was bitter and depressing. "

" Wow... I'm really not sure what to say about this final volume in the Shadowmarch series. Wonderful, intricate, exciting, and satisfying. The ending was two parts unexpected and one part very expected, but that's okay. This series has held so many surprises that an expected thing or two is okay with me. :) "

" Tad Williams shows us once again that he is a true master storyteller. In this forth and concluding book of the Shadowmarch series, Tad not only brings a dozen story lines to a conclusion, but he does so with truly delightful and refreshing imagination. Tad's stories never feel like they are copied from some one else's ideas; they are always new and interesting. I love being surprised and unable to guess how a story will end. I love it when the story is so creative that it is truly fascinating. If you love epic fantasy, you can't miss by reading any of Tad's books. I strongly disagree with reviewers that suggest the series is too long; I wish a story like this would never end. "

" Abysmally poor editing makes this book a tedious, disjointed and very unrewarding read. Had at least one third of its content been purged it might have been more enjoyable but it digressed so often into pointless episodes with minor characters that the only logical conclusion is that the author had a contract to fill 700 pages and did so at the expense of the storyline. By far the worst book of a very poor series, it really has changed my opinion of Tad Williams. There are far better fantasy writers out there. "

" The final book of the ShadowMarch series, I really liked Shadowheart. Williams has been one of my favorite fantasy authors for 2 decades and this conclusion was well done and an enjoyable read. My only real complaint about the book, and the only thing holding it back from being a 5, was that the ending seemed to really drag for me. The climax comes 130 pages before the ending and the rest is just "wrapping up loose ends." It felt as if those conclusion pages could have been done in half the time. Overall, though, the book was fantastic and I definitely enjoyed reading the series. Williams came thru again with and excellent series that captured the imagination and told in the words of a master storyteller. "

" A satisfying ending to a good series. In all, I really loved the complex world Williams created, especially the fairy type creatures and the mythology. I still liked the 3rd book the best, but I was not let down by this and blew through it a few days after getting it for Christmas... "

" More of a 3.5 really, but I decided to round up instead of down. I generally enjoy a really long book, but I thought I'd never finish this series. Not my favorite Tad Williams series or book, but everything was wrapped up at the end in a satisfying manner. "

" This would have been a much better story if it had the amount of the fourth book edited out of the whole work and it had been 3 books. of course 3 books doesn't make as much money as 4. It also suffered from the 'ewok' factor; excessive cute characters. "

" Sometimes the conclusion of a story makes the whole thing so much better. Shadowheart is such a conclusion, and after reading it, seeing all the carefully crafted plots wrapped up in a masterful way, I find myself satisfied by my choice to spend the 100+ hours it took me to finish this series. " I found the ending of this series just a tad too predictable, but worth the trip. There was one significant twist near the ending that I didn't see coming, where Williams played quite nicely with the readers expectation of how epic fantasy is supposed to work to set them up for a nice reveal.
