Plot Summary

Han Solo returns in Scoundrels (Star Wars), the latest of the Star Wars novels. If you ever wondered what happened to Han between the destruction of the Death Star in Episode IV and his rescue of Luke on Hoth in Episode V, this book finally has the answer. When last we saw our hero, he had played an important part in the mission to destroy the first Death Star. The daring smuggler should be resting on the laurels of his latest achievement, or at the very least celebrating like everyone else. But Han has nothing to celebrate. He is deep in debt, has already lost the reward for his part in the mission, and now there is a bounty out for his life.

Just when it seems like all hope is lost, and even Han has given himself up for dead, a mysterious stranger approaches him with a proposal that could solve all of his problems. The stranger offers him more than enough money to pay his debts and have the bounty called off, if only he will do a single job. It's a simple enough task. All he has to do is infiltrate the futuristic fortress of the most powerful crime family in the galaxy, crack an uncrackable safe, and procure its contents for the stranger.

For the near-impossible task at hand, Han recruits his loyal sidekick Chewbacca, his friend (and eventual betrayer) Lando Calrissian, and a collection of other individuals who are just the right combination of confident and crazy for the job.

Timothy Zahn is a renowned science fiction author, and a regular contributor to the Star Wars: Expanded Universe novel series. Born in 1951 in Chicago, Illinois, he has been publishing science fiction novels since 1983. A Hugo award winner in 1984, Zahn has also written the Blackcollar trilogy, and continues to publish novels in his Cobra series (six books so far). This is his tenth Star Wars novel.

"Thanks Mr. Zahn! Great book with lots of plot twists. No doubts now that Han shot first! A fine addition to the Star Wars universe. After reading this book I kind of wish Disney would do the Thrawn trilogy instead of something completely different. I'm going back and read those three books asap."

Publisher Summary

To make his biggest score, Han's ready to take even bigger risks.

But even he can't do this job solo.

Han Solo should be basking in his moment of glory. After all, the cocky smuggler and captain of the Millennium Falcon just played a key role in the daring raid that destroyed the Death Star and landed the first serious blow to the Empire in its war against the Rebel Alliance. But after losing the reward his heroics earned him, Han's got nothing to celebrate. Especially since he's deep in debt to the ruthless crime lord Jabba the Hutt. There's a bounty on Han's head - and if he can't cough up the credits, he'll surely pay with his hide. The only thing that can save him is a king's ransom. Or maybe a gangster's fortune?

That's what a mysterious stranger is offering in exchange for Han's less-than-legal help with a riskier-than-usual caper. The payoff will be more than enough for Han to settle up with Jabba - and ensure he never has to haggle with the Hutts again.

All he has to do is infiltrate the ultra-fortified stronghold of a Black Sun crime syndicate underboss and crack the galaxy's most notoriously impregnable safe. It sounds like a job for miracle workers...or madmen. So Han assembles a gallery of rogues who are a little of both - including his indispensable sidekick Chewbacca and the cunning Lando Calrissian. If anyone can dodge, deceive, and defeat heavily armed thugs, killer droids, and Imperial agents alike - and pull off the heist of the century - it's Solo's scoundrels. But will their crime really pay, or will it cost them the ultimate price?

" Not a huge fan of heist fiction. Too many moves by the victim of the heist are exactly what the peretrators planned no matter how from left field they may appear. Bringing Lando into the book doesn't really sit well with the conversations Han and Chewie had during Empire Strikes Back unless I'm misinterpretting something. 1/2 of the big reveal at the end was surprising though the second half of it became predictable. If you like Heist fiction, you may enjoy this one but if not, even die hard Star Wars fans may have problems with this book. "

" From time to time, I enjoy a good caper (ok, usually more in a movie type format). From time to time I think I should try reading some of the millions of Star Wars books. And from time to time, I apparently can do both things at once in a book like this. It was moderately enjoyable - it's like I got an itty-bitty dose of a few old friends but without any of that pesky character development - and now I've satisfied all those needs for a good long while (that whole expanded Star Wars Universe is a little too expanded for my feeble interest). " Good Heist Novel. Loved the ending twist. I think Tim Zahn always delivers with his novels. Only complaint would be some pacing issues but that may have just been related to my availability to actually read the novel vs. any actual problem in the book. "
