The Hollywood where Sammy Santos and Juliana Rios live is not the West Coast one, the one with all the glitz and glitter. This Hollywood is a tough barrio at the edge of a small town in southern New Mexico. Sammy and his friends, members of the 1969 high school graduating class, face a world of racism, dress codes, war in Vietnam, and barrio violence.

In the summer before his senior year begins, Sammy falls in love with Juliana, a girl whose tough veneer disguises a world of hurt. By summer's end, Juliana is dead. Sammy grieves; the memory of Juliana becomes his guide through the difficult year ahead. Sammy is a smart kid, but he's angry. He's angry about Juliana's death, he's angry about the poverty his father and his sister must endure, he's angry at his high school and its thinly disguised gringo racism, and he's angry he might not be able to go to college.

Benjamin Alire Saenz, evoking the bittersweet ambience found in such novels as McMurtry's The Last Picture Show, captures the essence of what it meant to grow up Chicano in small-town America in the late 1960s. Download and start listening now!

" I just wasn't into this book. From the beginning, the writing style rubbed me the wrong way. It just seemed really depressing and slow moving. I know the main characters are living in a crappy place during a crappy time but I expected them to be more colorful and lively. It is a strange book because there was definitely depth there, but I never quite bought into it. I got to my 100-page mark and stopped reading. "

" One of my favorite 2004 titles. Won the coveted JHUNT award. "

" Much better than the usual realist YA books I've been listening to. It was more complex, more divergent, less a single story with a single solution. I mean, there's the whole thing about it being "Sammy and Juliana" in Hollywood, and for most of it, Juliana's just not there. This read (listened) much more like an adult book, and that's a positive. "

" Wow, so much happens to Sammy Santos, the narrator of this wonderfully written book. Such a strong character who has to confront so many types of loss in a volatile period of American history. I am really enjoying Benjamin Alire Saenz's writing, it just compels you to finish the book in one sitting. "

" I've read this book so many times and each time I read it I notice something new about it. I think it's a great young adult novel because it's funny, sad, dramatic, and most of all, real. I love the voice Saenz creates in Sammy, and I like all the Spanish cuss words! You should read this book. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Beth Hultman | 8/23/2006

" I thought this book was going to be just awful based on the cover and title. Both horribly represent what this book is all about. It looks like it's going to be a lame romance, but it wasn't at all. It dealt with gritty, realistic themes (which I love) and wasn't in the slightest bit sappy. "
