Spanning the 20th century, the story of Roses takes place in a small East Texas town against the backdrop of the powerful timber and cotton industries, industries controlled by the scions of the town's founding families. Cotton tycoon Mary Toliver and timber magnate Percy Warwick should have married but unwisely did not, and now must deal with the deceit, secrets, and tragedies of their choice and the loss of what might have been—not just for themselves but for their children, and children's children. With expert, unabashed, big-canvas storytelling, Roses covers a hundred years, three generations of Texans and the explosive combination of passion for work and longing for love. Quotes & Awards

  • “Like Gone with the Wind, as gloriously entertaining as it is vast…Roses transports.”

    People

  • “The kind of book you can lose yourself in, from beginning to end.”

    Huffington Post

  • “Strong characters and plenty of conflict…moves smoothly from modern times to several generations back.”

    San Antonio Express-News

  • “The story is epic, the cast of characters is manageable, allowing the reader to get to know the players well.”

    Historical Novels Review

  • “A refreshingly nostalgic bouquet of family angst, undying love, and if onlys.”

    Publishers Weekly

  • “Coleen Marlo delivers an old-fashioned sprawling, multigenerational rags-to-riches tale with a healthy supply of steamy unrequited romance, all played out in the American heartland. Marlo is every bit a match for this material as she gives a strong performance that endows each character with personality and convincing emotions.”

    AudioFile

  • “As large, romantic, and American a tale as Texas itself.”

    Booklist

  • “A very enjoyable page-turner…A fine story, which steps right along at a lively pace, making Roses, even at a hefty six-hundred-plus pages, a surprisingly speedy read.”

" Finished her 2nd book Tumbleweeds a few weeks ago and just had to read this one. Her books are volumous, but engaging. This one the legacy of a cotton plantation family in east Texas. It should be a mini-series. Full of plot turns. I cried with Mary, got angry with Rachel. I loved this story! "

" One of those 'epic' stories that spans generations and involvs three families. The writing had me turning the pages quickly and although I figured there would be some sort of happy ending for someone at some point - it was a delicious winding of stories and drama that made this a fast read. Note - not one of the characters has much of a sense of humor so aside from occasional sarcasm and a wry observation here and there, don't look for any "

" This was a great book. I had a hard time putting it down. The family secrets and curses kept you on your toes. There were just enough characters to give it variety but not too many to get you confused. This is much more than just a romance. I would recommend this book to others. "

" Big, thick book. Good story, confusing the way the author jumped around the timeline. I love strong women characters, but especially the ones who are able to put aside their pride and do the right thing. It doesn't begin to compare with Gone With the Wind, but I still enjoyed the book. "

" I absolutely loved this book! I loved the way that it told the story from the different character's perspectives. I loved that when Mary's part was finished, it picked up the story from Percy's perspective. I did not want to put this book down and was sad when it ended. "

" Quick, easy, fluffy read. There's a review on the front that compares it to gone with the wind, I for sure wouldn't put it up there...but definitely a good read. I do recommend. Lots of secrets in a long line of family and it's nice to know all of them! I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Peggy | 4/20/2011

This is a thick book and therefore kind of intimidating to start, but it reads so fast. I couldn't put it down.

    Fun,fun,fun. "
